Likely revenge. When bees & wasps are in distress they release a chemical that calls their hive mates to come help.

praying mantises are the best! I buy mantis eggs each year and place them in the bushes around my garden. then in around June, my entire backyard has hundreds of those guys waging war against all of the insects that eat my plants. it's great.
I also do lacewings, cus those eat stinkbugs and wasps but sometimes those start fighting the mantises.
