???

I can't figure out what they were trying to accomplish.

Tow truck companies are just really operating in bad faith 90% of the time. That's not an exaggeration. If you Google this specific video you'll find this tow company was banned from operating in San Francisco and situations like this show why.

This goes one step beyond, though. Being duplicitous and towing cars that they have no business towing is one thing but the sheer brazenness of trying to tow a car that is being actively driven in full view of everyone defies all sensibility.

Like crime should have a point, shouldn't it? Even seemingly random acts have meaning to the person committing them, if nothing else. I cannot comprehend how anyone could possibly think trying to do this in any way serves a purpose.

The only thing that even kind of makes sense is if this was done out of...spite? For being banned (like "they won't let me tow in their fucking city, I'll show them" - that still doesn't make a lot of sense, though)? I found the full details of this tow company after this video first landed on my YouTube feed but even just knowing they were banned doesn't explain why anyone would try to do something like this.

To put it succinctly: why would someone do something that, if they actually go through with it and "succeed", has a 100% chance of being caught and brings no upside?

It absolutely should be a crime. They were trying to kidnap those people. It's dangerous. Then when the car got away from their plot, they engage in a chase?? Like you said what is the goal? At first I thought maybe this was an extreme repo but that wasn't even the case.

Exactly. It's randomly targeting the car that happened to be behind the tow truck.

You're actually going to attempt this? In an age where EVERYONE has a cell phone and a call to 911 that "this guy towed my car while I was stopped at a stoplight" is going to result from it? Talk about putting a target on your back.

Honestly I think part of the reason this is renting space in my head is also due to the lack of incredulity that the news reports I've seen on it have given this story. If I was trying to explain this to a television audience I'd want to convey how ludicrous the whole thing is.

I don't agree with doing something like this to do a repo but I could at least have some understanding of... Like why they're doing that. But it was a randomly targeted vehicle. I would sue that company for emotional distress because I would have been terrified.

For that matter, the driver/passenger would have likely been able to claim self-defense if they just straight up shot the tow truck driver for trying to kidnap them.

I mean I carry and this is definitely a scenario where it'd be out of my purse with the safety off just in case.

It would literally be grand theft auto if they actually got away with the car.

I've always seen most Tow Truck Drivers/companies as lowlifes, Tow companies tend to love to prey on people in Lower Income areas where they know they cant fight back with the cost of legal cases.
