They knew they screwed up big time. But the damage is already done. They will lose elections because of this.

Rep. McCarthy does not have the votes (14 times). Now, ousted!
Rep. Jordan does not have the votes (3 times).

Now those bipartisan Republicans will be shamed in to quitting their seats.

They made a critical mistake by actually going after Roe v. Wade. Their base is unintelligent enough that they would have been perfectly content with just being paid lip service until the end of time, but by actually repealing it, the GOP has galvanized the other side at no benefit to themselves.

The fact that the extremists in their party refuse to back down on this issue will make them pay for this at the ballot box

So what happens to the 2022 version that Arizona passed before their courts restored the 1864 version?

No, you see, he wanted ONLY dems to repeal it which would have been an impossibility so he could blame dems for a problem they didn't cause.

This. They've become the dog that finally caught up to the car and it was one of the dumbest things they could have ever done. "Keep sending us money and vote for us! We want to destroy Roe v Wade but it's those evil Democrats that keep stopping us! We need your help!" It was a license to print money for the party.

What's insane is the Republicans who voted against it will put out releases saying they are happy it passed.

They'll probably even take credit for it passing like they voted for it. Their dumbass base and ignorant people who barely follow politics will be the only ones who believe them, but that's enough.

They just deny most of it.

They drink the Kool-Aid claiming that most women who get abortions become depressed and/or suicidal, there is a significant risk of uterine perforation, and that birth control and abortions cause breast cancer.
So in the minds of these people, banning abortion and oral contraception actually saves womens' lives. Also, something about the Just World Fallacy (God would never put a woman in a situation where she had to choose between her life and "her baby's" thus abortion is never justified)

Of course a lot of these people also don't consider induced premature birth to be a form of abortion, only D&C, D&E, saline infusion abortions, etc of a live fetus. Thus in cases of hydrocephaly and the like, the woman should be restricted to getting a c-section, which has some pretty serious and permanent reproductive side-effects, has a much longer recovery time, and carries a much greater risk of postsurgical infection (although most of these types don't know that.)

The fact is, there are right-wing Christian Nationalist organizations who truly do believe in this shit and they're the ones who were funneling judicial picks to the GOP. Regardless of how a GOP lawmaker actually wanted the wind to blow, the people they were hiring were cultivated by a group who sincerely wanted to one day make this our reality.

Both the Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation are ran by true-believers who want some shitty Christo-fascist vision for the U.S. similar to Iran.
