I was born in 2000 and preordering never guaranteed me a copy of a game faster than going to the store on release day. I pre ordered Animal Crossing 3DS and GameStop didn't even give me a fucking cart just a download code.

There was a good long period of maybe a decade where GameStop was going so hard on pre-orders that they would intentionally under stock new games so that if you tried to buy it on release day they would tell everyone they were sold out and they should have pre-ordered.

Beyond artificial scarcity though, you do get the occasional nonsense like that one Arkham games where an entire side story was a pre-order bonus.

You get free costumes and a bonus 20-30 minute mission for it normally. Doesnt hurt if you actually want you play day 1.

Yes. Believe it or not, games used to actually sell out. If you didn't preorder a copy of Ocarina of Time in the 90s, you didn't get one (until a few weeks later)

See but in my experience pre order is basically just pre pay. GameStop didn't reserve a copy for me for Animal Crossing going back to the OP example. Interesting that it used to mean something but nowadays it feels like a relic and marketing scheme.

Depends on the game. It was very useful for me when Valkyrie Profile 2 came out and they ran out of copies. Still useful now.

Way back in the day physical copies of games sold out if you didn't pre order. Gaming wasn't the booming industry it is today. Rental stores like Blockbuster exist. Around the PS1 era, the NES kids were finally saving enough allowance up to buy their own games.

So Gamestop didn't know how many physical orders to get. They could order 10 copies of Time Commando or Alundra that just live in their store, but then 200 copies of Resident Evil Director's Cut would be gone in two days.

In fact, I think RE Directors Cut was what prompted me to pre order RE 2, and you better believe you needed to have RE2 pre ordered to play that game on release week. Same with Final Fantasy VII. The hype for those games was off the charts, and you wanted to dump weekend hours into them as fast as possible.

Inspired by another topic, but I do have a Maximo tshirt that I got for preordering the game. Got a Megaman one as well but don't remember which game in the series it was. There was a handful of times where steelbooks were also on a first come/first serve basis instead of being a different edition so a preorder was your best chance to snag one.

The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes. That's fact.
Everything else, is theory.

Never knew that but it makes sense in hindsight why something like Brawl wouldn't have been in-stock.

I remember buying Brawl on release and they told me I should have preordered and something like a $5 charge to do so... went right across the street to Toys R Us and they had plenty.

Personally, I don't see the point unless you want that lame preorder bonus these days for most titles, some games don't even let you preload.

There really isn't much point, unless you want to play the game hours within release. It's an old marketing gimmick from a bygone era before the industry blew up, and it's never going to shrink again to the degree it was.

I mean, gaming was this niche hobby like comic books and now they make more money than movies. You don't need physical hardware to play them. That's why they try to get you to pre order by shoveling junk at you, but that novelty wears off once you realize how much storage space that stuff takes up.

That GameStop definitely did something wrong, then. When you pre order, you choose physical or digital, and if physical, they hold a copy specifically for you for a certain amount of time. If digital, then yeah, they just print out a code. It's been that way for as long as I can remember.

Yes, it was pretty necessary if you wanted it on day one. If you didnt preorder a game, it was a matter of going to several different stores and getting lucky they had it. It was like when a console came out. It could be weeks before there would be a surplus of copies at the store.

But it hasn't been that way in 20 years. Last time it was that bad was San Andreas.

Fire Emblem Awakening and there's been a few games since then.

In Japan pre-ordering seems to be a bigger deal than here in America. They run out of stock quick like we used to 15 years ago.

How the hell has NO ONE mentioned the Wind Waker preorder? Far as I know, that was the only way to get the OoT + OoT Master Quest disc! At least that's how it went here in Canada.

I'm sure pre-ordering was a big deal in the 90s and 00s, so the first time I picked up the hype and started pre-ordering games in 2013 I instantly regretted it. I learned not to pre-order Nintendo games and just go to Nintendo World Store for the pre-release launch parties for extra merch bonuses. Pre-ordering hasn't been great since at least then, unless it comes with pre-order bonuses you can't get anywhere else.

I was a jrpg fan in the mid 90s. You didn't need to put any money down back then and release dates would often change. The internet was not great for this info. They'd call and update you or tell you when it was in and reserve your copy.

Generally, I'd give my dad money and he'd swing by after work and grab it for me. If it was a game that he was also interested in, he'd go halfsies with me.

The best part about this was that they sent them out early if you ordered online. Being a college bum with bad credit, my order got declined when they went to send WW. So I ended up getting the OoT stuff for free

The only time I saw this situation happen was with Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory on release day.

I was told all regular edition copies were gone, so they up-sold me to the [last] LCE copy they had for my system. IDK if CT had a pre-order option but, att, I felt lucky to get a copy.
