I'm listening to it for work right now. I wish some real radicals and advocates for the working class and unhoused got to make these arguments, the SG is leaving so many points on the table by trying to seem "reasonable" and agree with restrictions.

I don't get why they can't just give the homeless safe shelter. Literal prisons are more accomodating than what they do to the homeless. Just give people a safe little room and street homelessness would drastically shrink.

Shelters tend to be safe enough, it's the homeless inside that are dangerous if one of the "bad ones" get in and ruin it for others. It's not uncommon for homeless people to include people who are violent, addicts, thieves or otherwise unstable mentally and looking to get in someone's face about it whether they be the staff or the other homeless people there.

Texas already fine homeless 500 dollars

House Bill 1925 would make camping in an unapproved public place a Class C misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500. The bill calls for law enforcement officers to redirect homeless people to available local resources such as shelters or nonprofit groups before or at the time they issue a citation.

Fining them seems counter productive; they don't have money. I'm all for clearing out encampments, but there's gotta be somewhere for them to go. I'd like to see an increase in federal and state spending on shelters before enacting any law criminalizing sleeping on public property.

Well that's the thing, if you just throw 10 people into a room the odds that one is dangerous aren't very small. The lack of isolation is the problem.

The whole thing is kind of a big catch 22, at least for the homeless population that this kind of stuff is targeting. I'd say the best solution would be the funding of forced institutionalization with extra focus on actual care. The biggest problem is systems like that tend to be rife with abuse, so it would take some real legwork to make sure they aren't just being shoved into a different kind of squalor.
