perhaps since around when it came out. So, this was a sorta new experience in a way. I am at the final dungeon and i've done just about everything worth doing as far as sidequests.

The story at least so far isn't all that memorable. You spend too long in this game not really knowing shit aside from "kuja bad" until way later on. I guess a lot of JRPGs or FFs kinda have this happen.

The characters aren't super memorable for me, either.

However this game has a lot of attention to detail and other fan stuff in it. I love the moogle mail concept and a lot of the attention to details they have like how the world map moogle gets pissed if you call him and don't need him and the various things hinted at when talking to the smart moogle in the Q's marshes.

The world setting is neat. Feel like a mix of steampunk/medieval and it's neat.

What I really liked is how this game is chock full of fun and worthwhile sidequests, though part of that is PC has the speed up function, I imagine choco graph hunting at regular speed would be grueling to get through. But the sidequests are neat. Trivia question guy and the friendly monster sidequests were cool, and the friendly monster one has the added bonus of making one of the superbosses much easier, which leads me to....

I like Ozma a lot. They don't have 5,000,000,000,000 HP, only around 60K, but the AI is actually semi smart in this so even though he has low HP for a superboss, it was really fun trying to take him down.

Frog catching was kinda fun until I got to the end and depleted the marshes so I had to wait a bit to get the last few, but it was unique and I liked it.

Card game isn't as fun as FF8s, but it's still kinda cool.

Overall my impression is the story is meh, characters are alright, but the attention to detail and sidequests are really, really fun, and a lot of them are actually worth the effort.

I know the actual final boss is kinda whack because it's just a random thing who isn't actually Kuja as I remember. Weird, but seeing as FF8s final boss was kinda stupid(though we did know they'd be the final boss in the last 10% of the game) it's...okay.

I don't know why I never went back and replayed this one but I have played 7 and 8 20 times each is probably because once the PS2 game out, the leap in graphics was actually massive, so I kinda soured on PS1 which was a dumb move, but that could explain why I never went back. I had beaten 7 and 8 a couple of times by then, so they stuck.

beating a game in ages? thats hornyposting from agesboy's perspective

anyways ff9 is a game i wish i could have loved but it never truly clicked for me. i really need to give it another shot. i've given 8 like five shots and never finished it

though part of that is PC has the speed up function,
this makes a strong case for me though, because 4x speed is the only way I could ever have finished Trails in the Sky FC, one of my favorite games ever

I use speed up in games where it is an option because I like a challenge but time is what gets me. I don't mind the challenge of chocograph hunting, but the damn bird pecks way too slowly for my liking. Or even basic shit like getting in the airship. air travel is soooo slow(but, obviously quicker than before you have vehicles), but then finding a good landing spot you need to take off the speed or else you'll never land where you want. Give and take but yeah I use it a lot.

older rpgs do feel like they're disrespecting your time when playing with today's (or I guess, our now adult) perspective, yeah. I get why they were like that but I'm still gonna tweak it so its more fun for me, even if the game doesn't innately support it. cheat engine's great at more than just cheating!

I don't particularly like 9 very much. I think on average its appropriately rated but these days it feels like 9 fans have all found each other and turned into this annoying blob that gets all mad at anyone disliking it (or just screaming about it being the best if they're left alone). The parts where it shines are quite good: Vivi's story is good; the amount and variety of side stuff is good; it has a fun fantasy vibe; the locations are varied; etc. But its uneven (Amaranth, Quina, and Freya's stories kind of don't go anywhere) and just not as good I think it gets hyped up to be, again, specifically by the fans that are still around talking about it.

Yeah so as far as the characters go Amarant comes in pretty late and also doesn't add much to the story. just kind of like a stereotypical badass who sticks by the party even though they're wussies and beneath him, Quina is hilarious at times but he/she/it(the game IS ambiguous about it) doesn't really serve much of a purpose to the story, and yeah Freya could have been way cooler in the story.

honestly, i like characters like quina. if they're integrated into the story well (like cait sith) then they're even better, but as long as they don't take away from or make the important parts of the story terrible i'd rather have a few silly characters around, especially if they have a cool moveset. mog has like no relevance to the story in the entire second half of FF6 but he's still one of my favorite characters.

agreed about amaranth and freya though, sadly. amaranth had just about nothing going for him, which is kind of annoying as he comes in around when eiko does if i remember right and she ends up getting more fleshed out than most of the cast. freya's just tragic. easily one of my favorites but they just forget she exists the further things go on, which is really ironic considering her quote.

While Kuja does basically nothing all game, he does become a very nice penultimate boss; He does something that I really like in games that typically only Bowser does and that's use one of your own unique powers against you. (Trance in this case)

It reflects Kuja's journey on finding out if he's even alive or not, something that Zidane experiences as well from the opposite angle. The perfect nemesis tale.

I always liked Kuja because he doesn't lose

Everyone hates on FFIX but it's GOAT and got 94 on Metacritic. Played it multiple times and it's too good for the speed up which ruins the entire experience. Could never use speed up.

I love Lord Jesus, Family Matters (for Steve & Laura which I typed up a beautiful alt from Just One Date episode) and FFIX (for Zidane & Garnet).

9 was the least memorable for me.

I beat the game twice (once for all of the side content and main story, again for the "under 20 hours" weapon), but I honestly couldn't tell you anything about it outside of one or two story beats.

Meanwhile, I beat 4 once, ten years earlier, and can pretty much recite half the story from memory. And that was another one I never really cared for.

It's one of my favorite games ever. Played it in my teens well after release in 2013 and loved it so much. Perfect game for that time of my life
