E2-3 earns its place in the top 5. Many appreciated how it adds to the overall universe of Ace Attorney. The case taking place in the past and present was also praised by several. It, just like many other AAI2 cases, is thought of as too long.

Summary:

You can't have a teenaged side-kick for too long before they end up a murder suspect; Edgeworth learns this lesson the hard way, putting his entire career on the line to defend Kay not from the mysterious figure that attacked her, but the Prosecutorial Investigations Committee that is determined to have the both of them locked away.

Main Characters: Miles Edgeworth, Dick Gumshoe, Kay Faraday, Raymond Shields, Justine Courtney, Sebastian Debeste, Franziska von Karma
Other Characters: Karin Jenson, Jill Crane, Bonnie Young, Ema Skye, Lotta Hart, Blaise Debeste, Shelly de Killer

My rating: 3/10. I love the characterization here. I mentioned before that Kay eventually pays off and this is the case I'm thinking of. ...Of course, it's the case where Kay doesn't act like Kay at all. But I really enjoy Edgeworth and Kay's relationship in this chapter. Courtney's heel-face turn is nice, too. And Karin/Bonnie's role is pretty good. I like the twist of an unreliable autopsy on top of an unreliable narrator. But I don't really like anything else about this case, though. I find the murder pretty uninteresting and I feel like it relies a bit too heavily on fanservice to lift up what's there. I like Blaise, but he's such a massive jobber. And the pacing is slow. E2-2 is worse, but at least it has reason to be long. E2-4 does not, really.

This was my least favorite case in AAI2 by a lot. Nothing about it really worked for me, the whole premise of Kay having amnesia was super lame and didn't pay off in any interesting way. I was hoping for a mystery where the items that Kay had on her would be some kind of puzzle for retracing her actions on the night of the crime - that would have been really interesting! But no, all of the items she had on her were just planted there to make her look guilty. Boring. The premise of this case is lacking. The cast isn't that great. Courtney's face turn is really good though.

I said Kay plays better as the damsel in distress than the assistant, and this is the prime example. She brings out a side of Edgeworth that we don't get to see elsewhere. I like the face turn from Courtney at the end, too.

Blaise is a lame villain though. He's Redd White 2.0, this guy who's presented as ultra powerful and then gets dunked on for the rest of the game.

Which case has Ray Shields completely betray his client with no remorse or introspection about if he's doing the right thing?

2/10.

This is a case where it's less than the sum of its parts.

That would be the next one, but it's okay because they're the bad guys.

Para's memory is better than mine but I assume I felt similarly. From what I remember, I really didn't like this case. And what's odd is that compared to stuff like mediocre DD cases or AAI1 cases where "didn't like" means "I was bored / not invested", I mean I think I actively disliked this one. Everything about it just felt "off". I don't remember why in particular.

Part of it is likely due to the "pacing" - E2-4 is a "short case." Nevermind that it's still longer than a ton of non-finale cases from before the series got bloated pacing, in context of this game it is filling the "4th case" slot which tend to be short cases. But this case tries to do a lot, if any case deserved more time it'd be this one! But from what I recall, the murder mystery was lame and then everything with Blaise felt like it kinda came out of nowhere. I mean I get he was probably the climax of the "you're losing your badge!!!" plot but we hadn't met him and then we did and then he's taken out and idk it just didn't feel right ever.

It's weird, a lot of this feels like a finale case, and then it just... isn't. Kay's amnesia sucks too.

E2-3 - 9.5
E2-4 - 7

forgot to rank yesterday's, which is a shame because it really is one of the best cases in the series. imagine destroying case 3 syndrome so decisively! my feelings on shields changed pretty quick. his younger self is so cute! and him bonding with both edgeworths ... yeah, im a fan! almost everyone else shines in this case. this is exactly how i imagined gregory to be like and i couldn't be happier to play as him. gustavia is such a great/awful villain and constantly had me going "i feel bad for you ... nevermind ... actually no i do feel a bit bad ... actually, nevermind." after all, dover is a total asshole too. everyone else was great too, except maybe larry, but at least he was bearable.

also, and i cannot stress this enough, the image of manfred von karma dramatically emerging from a willy wonka ass chocolate castle is peak comedy. beautiful.

e2-4 is a little harder for me to place. like the first aai title, this one has five cases that make up one bigger mystery, and this one really really feels like it. maybe its because the victim of e2-5 is literally spitting distance from this case's setting ... anyhoo ...

i think what drags this case down is the set up. i said the amnesia in the lost turnabout didn't bother me, because if any case is going to have a dumb amnesia plot, it would be a silly tutorial. I think if kay just had short term memory loss, id vibe better. the nurse/doctor characters took some time getting used to too... the slapstick routine is certainly something.

this case really feels like set up for the next one. it is nice to see courtney get some development, but of course we aren't done with her yet. blaise is a chilling antagonist, but of course we aren't done with him either! kay's story is also unresolved. edgeworth turning in his badge was a great moment too! hope it reaches a satisfying conclusion. this game was great so far, one of the best in the series!

Mostly for the scene where Edgeworth turns in his badge. This case has a lot of problems.

I think it's pretty interesting but also doesn't stick the landing at all. A lot of unachieved potential.
