Loot Ballistic Fiber items as much as you can. Starting at Lv. 25, you need obscene amounts to repair and make armor. Go to Fort McClintock as early as possible to loot the military ammo bags and military-grade duct tape.

What platform?

Go into settings and make sure Pacifist mode is turned on, you probably don't want to be dabbling with PvP until you're leveled and geared up some. There's also a setting to toggle the Survival mechanics, but you can leave it off and just get positive buffs from eating/drinking etc.

If you stand around and look clueless, someone is bound to dump heaps of plans, ammo, mats, and gear on you. The community, for the most part, is incredibly helpful and friendly.

i've played it for several hundred hours as a solo player and it's a blast. the biggest thing you'll be dealing with is storage space. there's also not really much need to do any of the daily stuff or events until you're an appropriate level, but don't let it stop you. overall just have a good time! it's a much better game than i ever expected it to be.

Have fun! Despite its flaws, Fallout 76 is a lot of fun. And it has the nicest community I've seen in an online game. To the point where people will rush new players and drop tons of ammo and heals for them.

When I started, I had lvl 1000 dudes come into my shack base, drop a billion heals and schematics before blasting off again. And I fondly remember seeing a level 5 player stumbling into the final area and a dozen power armoured dudes trying to keep them alive and safe from the boss.

THIS, also farm the asylum if you have ur own private server, great loot run. I do it every 2/3 days and I have 10,000's of every mat. Also there's some great material runs at West Teck research and Nation Isolated Radio Array. Be forward though, those areas have some high level enemies that do serious damage. Best is to have Fo1st where you can just drop the tent in front of the location on ur own server- clear the location, loot and be severely over weight and then break down components at ur tent
I'm level 478 and use a twoshot-explosive handmade and also a twoshot-explosive 10mm submachine gun (bullet hose)
People just don't like this game because it sucks until you get higher level weapons and rare drops. This makes it very limited for a while the range in which you can travel initially. In Fo76, good drops are RARE!!! Fighting scorch beasts south of Watoga nets the best drops but everyone crowds those events so its hard to get the rare drops. When looting, don't even look at what it is just mash the loot button and then look at ur drop from the menu screen. 99% change its trash but that 1% chance drop completely changes the aspect of this game.
Also check out peoples vending machines in their settlements for plans, great way to find em. Sell plans in your vending machines too, great revenue generators. Price accordingly and do drop prices if u can unload it

Oh snap thanks. Is it possible to get there as a new player or is it like events in certain other games that require you to have made a lot of progress first?

I'm late to the topic, but I'd say just focus on enjoying the questline for a bit. Pop into some events if you're feeling up for it. But hover your cursor over the event icon on the map first, to check how many people are already there. Most events are very hard to solo at low level, but you can still get the rewards, so long as you're there when the event is completed. So go to the events that have plenty of people there.

Oh and do the daily/weekly quests (viewable in the pause menu, not the pip boy) too if you can. They give you progress for a system called the scoreboard, where you gain lots of free goodies.

And to everyone hating on the game, I say give it a try. It's in a much better place than it was at launch. Lots of NPCs and questlines now and the community is super helpful. Just like evilpresident, when I first started this high level guy just randomly gave me lots of stimpacks and water (thankfully not enough to overencumber me). And with the Fallout show doing well on Amazon, Fallout 76 has seen an influx of new players

While the game was poop at launch I think it's pretty great now. It is a not of fun if you have friends to play with too. It got a next gen update a while back and plays pretty well now on PS5 too

I believe it. I did play it around launch, when it was basically an empty playground with almost nothing to do. No NPCs, few enemies, seeing other players was fairly uncommon even. It was just run around, occasionally run into a couple of those rad-burned folks, find an audio log, repeat.

The game doesn't gate locations.

You can go anywhere the second you step out of the vault.

Point Pleasant is on the western side of the forest. (the region you start in)

Although it should be noted that some areas and events are ill advised as a new player. Like avoid the Seismic Activity event at first. The boss in that event does an AOE slam attack that hits you even if you're in the air (you have to be really high in the air to avoid it). So at low level, you'd be continuously getting one shot by a nearly unavoidable attack. Not a fun time lol.

New players should also avoid areas that have been nuked and really the entire lower right section of the map.
