my order through this series is weird so far

so I watched the steins;gate anime and loved it so I read the VN as well and loved it to. I then read chaos;head (not noah whatever that is) and I loved the first half but the second half after they introduced those giant swords or whatever got a bit dumb IMO, I forgot a lot of what happened in this entry though.

i didnt read robotics;notes ever yet

i did read steins;gate 0 and I thought it was alright but it didnt live up to steins;gate

i havent read chaos;child or robotics;notes dash yet. I also didnt read side stories

i also know nothing about Occultic;nine or anonymous;code

should I read the rest of all these entries and what about the side stories

I'm a big fan of the Science Adventure series and I'm a firm believer in that all of the mainline entries are good to fantastic.

Chaos;Head Noah is the definitive version of Chaos;Head. It fixes the pacing and adds in individual character routes for each heroine and gives it a proper ending. I know some people are turned off by the main character but I really enjoyed the atmosphere in Chaos;Head with how tense it is and how you're not sure what you're seeing is real or not.

Robotics;Notes is my favourite entry in the series. It's quite different to the other entries as it's very character focused and almost slice-of-life esque. The characters are some of the most well-written in any VN and you really enjoy bonding with each of them. While it can be read alone, it follows on from events that have happened in both Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate. (especially Chaos;Head).

Robotics;Notes DaSH is a sequel to Robotics;Notes and not that great to be honest. It's more of a side story than a mainline entry where Daru from Steins;Gate arrives and pervs on the Robotics Club members. Bear in mind that Robotics;Notes takes place in 2020 and Daru at this point has a wife and daughter and is in his thirties and it's not a great look for him. Surely he would have grown out of it by now. Not a whole lot happens in it either.

Chaos;Child, some people claim is the highlight of the entire series. It's a spiritual sequel to Chaos;Head but none of the cast appear in it. It takes place 6 years after the events of that and once again, strange murders are starting to take place in Shibuya that bear a resemblance to ones from 6 years ago. While you can read it without experiencing Chaos;Head, I would strongly recommend that you read Chaos;Head first. Chaos;Child expects you to know certain things and builds on your expectations and subverts them in multiple ways.

Occultic;Nine doesn't have an English translation and probably won't get one any time soon. The VN was a flop in Japan and despite promises by the team to work on a director's cut (like Chaos;Head Noah) that seems to have been quietly cancelled. Your only real option here is to watch the anime or read the light novel. It's not a great entry in my opinion.

Anonymous;Code is the culmination of every mainline entry that has come before it. It takes place in 2038 and is about a group of hackers who get the ability to "save and load" the world state, enabling one of them to travel back in time to a previous save point. It heavily relies on events established in Steins;Gate. I would recommend that you tackle this last but the only real necessary reading for this is Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0.

Every single entry (bar Occultic;Nine) has an improvement patch by Committee of Zero (https://sonome.dareno.me/projects/) which massively improve the English translation as the official translations raise from subpar to average. The team make sure that each is handled with a ton of love and care and considering how intertwined the entries are, that the terminology is consistent. As you can probably tell, I'm a huge fan of the franchise and if you have any questions, feel free to send them my way.

should I reread chaos;head (noah edition)? is it changed that much?
i did read the original ages ago so I forgot a lot. or maybe i read noah and didnt know it. i remember girls with giant swords and they ended up taking on the organization of 300 or something

you've convinced me to continue with the rest of the series though.

so basically ill read in this order:

chaos;head Noah (maybe)
robotics;notes elite
chaos;child
robotics;notes dash
anonymous;code

and ill grab those improvement patches as well

They've added in a lot of new content to Noah that wasn't in the original. The original was rushed and all of the routes were cut. Noah is the definitive way to play and considering it's been a while you may as well re-read!

And yeah, that order seems good to me. As for side content with Steins;Gate - Linear Bounded Phenogram is decent but My Darling's Embrace is pretty lame.

steins;gate is one of my top 3 personal favorite stories I think. if chaos;child is the highlight that does seem like something special. steins;gate itself is unforgettable for me

i recently finished Raging Loop so I'll start with Chaos;Head Noah tonight

This was me. S;G and S;G 0 were amazing, and then I started C;H and the protag really turned me off it

c;h protag killed me. well not entirely because it was before I'd read many VNs and I was subsisting on the novelty value of the whole thing but if I read it nowadays I'd almost certainly have dropped it. I assume noah is better about it (and about a lot of other things) but I have no interest to reread

c;c is amazing though it's so weird to think they're the same series

this is gonna seem like the smallest irrelevant thing, but thank FUCK the Chaos;Head saves go into My Documents

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/forum/2/2d73675f.png

So it syncs via Onedrive. And therefore I don't need to manually transfer the save between my PC and ROG Ally every time I wanna switch devices

I watched the Robotics;Notes anime, and I quite liked it. I've seen people shit on it or say it was ultra forgettable, and long term, perhaps that is true

However, I distinctly remember at the time, people thought Frau was peak and the nerdy serious guy was cool. They liked the AI girl in the AR world, and they had fan arts aplenty during the anime's airing.

Also the anime ended really well. Because so much of it is them bonding together and living a carefree life trying to make their stupid club work, when shit hits the fan, and all these serious people get foiled by the virtue of them being carefree makes all the slice of life feel like there was a point to all of it. Definitely the type of show where if you stop in the middle, you'll think it's complete shit, but the payoff makes it all the worth your while

It's pretty decent imo. Hard to say about the quality because it's been so long, and I'm probably gonna notice when they outsourced some parts of the animation more. Most of the Frau scenes were really good, cuz they did well to show how musky and cold that room actually is.

How are the anime adaptations overall?
Chaos;Head and Chaos;Child's anime adaptations are atrocious. Chaos;Head attempts to squash 30 hours into 12 episodes and still have a filler episode thrown in there. Chaos;Child fares slightly better but it's still a terrible adaptation.

Robotics;Notes is serviceable but jettisons most of the character development leaving most of the cast as blank, boring slates. The main character, Kai, suffers the most from this. He's a really interesting character in the VN but this gets dumped in the anime turning him into a bland forgettable guy who just plays fighting games. Considering that R;N has the strongest cast in the entire franchise it's disappointing to see the cast reduced to shallow versions of their original selves.

Really, it's only Steins;Gate that got a good adaptation. S;G0's anime has its problems too but it's still watchable.

For what it's worth I liked the Occultic;Nine anime. It has some problems. About half the cast talks way too fast as they try to condense all of their worldbuilding and intrigue down into 22 minute episodes. Seriously some parts need to be watched at .75x speed. The twist(s) are also super easy to predict if you just pay careful attention. When they finally draw back the curtain and explain the sci-fi components at play it's almost completely nonsensical and very much screams "Don't worry this will make sense in the VN". Sort of like the ending to Punch Line.

But aside from those admittedly pretty big problems I still had a lot of fun with the series. The characters were entertaining, I enjoyed the general atmosphere almost as much as Chaos;Head, and the animation was pretty well done and has a few pretty iconic moments left in my memory too. Shame it didn't do well though.
