He didn't really believe in the force. Lots of people didn't. Motti was just one of them, so Vader gave him an impromptu theology lesson.

He's Darth the hell Vader. I have more faith that anything that guy does is wrong than I have in my ability to judge right from wrong.

If he were shown in A New Hope petting kittens, I'd have no choice but to assume petting kittens is secretly evil and I just never knew it.

That's always been weird to me. Either Vader puts down dissenters like this all the time, the upper management of the Empire has no clue they're working for a couple of space wizards, or this is the literal first guy to ever speak up. How long has the Empire been in operation?

It's this.

Most of the Empire has no idea that Palps is a Sith and they just think he's a weird old man who got fucked up by the Jedi. More of them know that Vader is a Force user and Palps' enforcer but even that isn't super widespread. Helps that Palps actively purged information about the Force and the Jedi in the early days of the Empire.

I'll never get how characters in the prequels see a lightsaber or robes and instantly go "Ah you're a Jedi!" and 19 years later everyone in the universe suddenly believes they're a fairy tale.

There's a reason why you don't go out of your way to insult coworkers for their religious beliefs, Motti. If the Rebels hadn't blown up the Death Star with him onboard, I'm pretty sure things would have eventually gotten to the point of Vader Force-choking the bastard again, possibly in a situation where Tarkin either wasn't there or was willing to let Vader kill his ass.

its probably because the prequels were written years after the OT. If the prequels came first, or at least were preplanned, there would probably be a bigger time skip between them.

I don't think the Jedi were that common. They existed in small enough number that Palpatine & Vader could kill all of them in just a few hours, minus some stragglers like obi-wan.

This is the real world reason, but in universe there's only like 10000 Jedi and literally thousands of planets with millions of beings on each, most would never even see or hear of a Jedi. Add in Palps actively waging a disinformation campaign and destroying knowledge of the Force and the Jedi once he was in power and it makes sense to a degree that there are skeptics like Han.

The total casualty rate for the Yuuzhan Vong war was 365 trillion.

Which is non-canon and probably proof that sci-fi writers can't do math, but that's a big fuckin' number and patently not the total population.

That's likely it, but that still is an easy oversight to fix while taking the short timespan into account when writing the prequels. Having the Jedi be some mysterious urban myth from the get-go.

TBF the Vong had a tendency to scour entire planets by dropping moons on them and hitting them with viruses that eradicated all life, but yeah that number is suspect even with that.

TL:DR - species from outside the galaxy invades, they have a fanatical religious hatred for machines and all their ships/weapons/etc are biotech, they wage a holy war, lots of people die. Also they can't be sensed in the Force and you can't use it on them directly as they are cut off from it.

It's worse than Star Wars fanfiction. It's like bad Star Trek fanfiction that got ported over.

I mean, kinda. They're basically just every dumb thing every mediocre author has ever added into Star Wars, but rolled into one.

"Biotech" is lame and gross and doesn't fit well into the Star Wars aesthetic. Being "outside the force" because they're from a different galaxy is just... incredibly stupid. The fact that the war against them utterly and irrevocably annihilated the feel of Star Wars continuity by killing 360+ TRILLION people.

It's just... the amount of dumb shit associated with the concept of the Vong and their actions within the story is beyond measure.

Also the BDSM/self-mutilation thing isn't an across the board trait for the Vong, it's more of a factional trait. There's a Vong faction early on that gets focused on that's really fuckin' into it and are viewed as extremists even by the other Vong.

What they ARE all into is replacing body parts with creatures and implants that give them various abilities, and if your body rejects an implant, hey guess what, the gods hate you and now you're of the lowest caste.

That's not why they're outside the Force. It was speculated both in and out of universe as the reason before it's revealed why they're actually cut off towards the end of the series. Between this and your comment about self-mutilation I question how familiar you actually are with the series or if you're just going off what you've heard.
