Diablo GF. Level it up and you can reduce or even just turn off random encounters.

This is literally genius and made it perfect. We didn't need to see npc monsters mindless rotating for no reason. Infact many mechanics of that are pretty dumb like how you do a mini-stealth game that is poorly made or get first strike in literally every encounter because of course a human can always find the backside of an animation.

Like this was peak JRPGing at least when it came to moving through the world (not talking about the battle system).

Other issue with modern npc monster patrolling is respawn times when you want to farm.
With Diablo system you can choose to just go through story, level a little bit or farm whenever you want.

I refuse to play any random encounter RPG ever again now that games finally have enemies appear in the overworld that I can choose to engage with or avoid. Its just infinitely better.

Yeah this. I will still def play me a random encounter game but it really is hard argue that the Tales of method is better than random encounters.

that's one thing I liked about FF8 and since monsters/bosses scaled with your level, you weren't necessarily punished for being under-leveled.

I think GFs still needed to be levelled up to get stronger, but idr cus it's been a while since I played.

Molulu's Charm was only for Mog. But the Ward Bangle can lowers the encounters by half.
The only Final Fantasy who let you lower the encounters before FF6 were FF5 and FF4 in later ports/remakes.

People think they hate r.e. but they're confused, they don't hate random encounters they hate those long ass load times and battle transition screens every time there's a random battle. If battles were blink-of-the eye instantaneous as they should be, and over quickly in 1 second, they wouldn't loathe them so much.

Also ff 8 and all garbage level scaling games are problematic because they actively make you not want to play the damn game. Punishing the player for playing the fucking game is absurd and I never understood the appeal of wrpgs that do this.

I unironically think Zelda 2 solved random encounters. They show up on the map at random, run around a bit, then disappear and it's on you if you made contact.

They also brought it back in the sequel, while basically framing it as basically doing Jedi Mind Tricks when they give it to you.

I wouldn't really say it's missable though. Think every single one of us tried that item once given by Cid and got our asses kicked the first time we faced Diablos. It's really only missable if you actively don't choose to engage with that content beyond that.

Do it how Pokemon does it and have grass (or specific terrains) where enemies can only appear. And have it be possible to go through the game without needing to go to these grass/terrains if you don't want to

For some of us, progression in terms of skills/talents/etc are more interesting and are generally more meaningful than suddenly being able to one shot an enemy because you picked up a new sword. It never made sense for the world to get less dangerous because of a new sword. It should get less dangerous based on your skill and abilities.

In saying that though, it should always be a toggle. Options = good, no options = bad.

Random encounters meaning you just go into a battle randomly?

A lot of more recent games still basically have them, but you can now see them on the field and thus try to avoid them to an extent. Which to be fair, are not really "random."

Beats me. I never had an issue with random encounters unless the encounter rate was especially egregious (mainly if there was no "safe" range; like if you could get into another battle by taking a single step after the previous battle)

I think the "symbol" encounters of modern games kind of cheapens the experience. For instance, in games like Dragon Quest, it eventually turns into "avoid everything that isn't a metal slime" after some point because there is little to no reason to fight anything else, which trivializes the leveling process.

That was the only area you could encounter them? It's been awhile but you get my point some monsters are big enough there should be no way you don't see them till you are right on top of them
