at ports at foreign countries after they are late getting back to the ship after it was made very clear to all passengers what time they are supposed to be back? You ever been on a cruise where this happened?

Sometimes things happen beyond your control. If its your fault I still feel sorry for them but they have to take responsibility for their tardyness. Its not blank and white. I almost missed a flight in Sofia because a taxi failed to turn up and we ended up waiting three hours for another one as it was a public holiday. So I understand sometimes shit happens.

Generally, no
You have like an entire extra hour or two before the boat leaves for real. They'll also outright look for you or if you were on an affiliated excursion and something happened, they'll coordinate and figure it out. I'm sure there's some exceptional circumstances, but you'd mostly need to go out if your way to be left behind.

read a big one , where they scheduled a private tour of a port in africa. Not related to the cruise line but that private tour could not make it back in time. What do you think is this scenario?

No, you are told when to come back. Excursions from the ship, if delayed, the ship will wait for them. If you decide to charter a private tour and it comes back late, too bad for you.

Yes you can get excursions through the cruise line itself. They often have a representative come with. If it's delayed they have radios to tell the ship. We almost got delayed when a bamboo tree fell in front of a tour bus in a Puerto Rican rain forest.

Like regular people? Its one of the few all-inclusive and somewhat luxurious vacations a person of middle class status can afford these days. I actually have 2 cruises booked this year.

Some people like to wait on the top deck right before the ship leaves port so they can watch for "Pier Runners" as they are called. Then they film them and put them on TikTok or whatever so other people can shame them.

Most the time is it is there fault so not at all. That is just bullshit. And if the ship waits on them that is fucking things up for everyone else. So they may show they don't care about others.

On the rare times something out of their control happens would feel bad. But that isn't the case most times.

It the delay is caused by an excursion they booked though the cruise company, then yes.

If the delay is caused by them doing something that wasn't controlled by the cruise company, like you decided to get smashed at Senior Frogs and passed out on a bench, then see ya!

Had that happen once during a bus trip.

It was in Ireland, and a bus trip from Dublin to the cliffs of Moher. There is basically nothing but some tourist center and, well, pretty cliffs.

When it was time to return, a couple was simply gone. Big search, public announcment on the whole area, no clue.

After like an hour, we had to leave without them, and the police was still searching for them with helicopter and stuff.

On the way back, our bus driver did a quick stop, to tell us that they found them.

They were chillin in the cafe the whole time. They just ignored all the announcments because they didn't expect it to be actually about them.

Taking private tour excursions far from port is a risk for that very reason. Stick to the cruise excursions or just wander around town if you want to be sure of being back.

I mean, there is nothing there. Just cliffs and the wild sea, hundreds meters below you.

Even without knowing they were missing we were already having thoughts like "damn, we don't want to know how many people suicide here."

And suddenly some people are gone.

Well yeah, people went missing on a tour. No one knew where they were and couldn't get a hold of them so a search was called. People are often billed for all of that time, especially if they are absent minded fools not paying attention to reality around them.

Sure, why wouldn't you? It's not hard to imagine some guy losing track of time in a bar or something. On vacation, no less. And then he's gotta arrange his own transportation and stuff.

It's not like you can't simultaneously stick to schedule and feel bad for the guy you're leaving behind.

Depends entirely on the circumstances. There are events that can take place that are not in control of tourists that could prevent someone from returning in time. But if it is just "losing track of time" or being narcissistic enough to believe an entire boat will wait for them? Nah.

I dont know if ditching them in a foreign country is ideal but there is a harm to the business and passengers by being forced to delay. Perhaps this a $1000 fee has been charged to your card kind of situation.

Probably... some circumstances even with the best intentions can go awry.

Almost happened to me - in Beijing, about 2.5 hrs from the port. 4:00 rolls around and the ship says all aboard by 8:00. We start heading back. Need a cab to get to where our tour guide is parked. FORTY FIVE MINUTES to get a cab. We get to the tour guide's car, it's Beijing during rush hour, there is most definitely going to be a traffic jam. We get to the highway (where it would then be clear sailing) around 6:00 (do the math).

Our tour guide starts doing 180 in a 120 zone (kph). We get there with 15 minutes to spare. They are calling our emergency contact (4 am back home), we don't have passports. We would have been truly f'd, especially with the next port not being for 3 days.

So having been in such a close call, yeah, I would feel bad for someone who was legitimately trying to get back, but got stuck due to circumstances they hadn't anticipated.

I brought my passport every single time I left the ship for this exact reason. If something goes wrong, I need a way to get the hell home.
