Both true and not. But if your friend was gonna eat dinner then it was time to go home where I grew up. Cuz otherwise you would be late for your own dinner and get a scolding.

For me it was this

Eating Infront of a guest who starves, did not happen.
It was as far as i can tell by reading about this, more common that the guest just hangs out in the kids room, i think

We always asked if our guest wanted to eat with us.
Then one of three things happened.
1: The Guest ate with us.
2: The Guest went home because it was time for him to eat at home.
3: The Guest had already eaten, or would eat later, so he either continued to do whatever he did in another room or sat at the table having a conversation while we ate.

Now that i think back, i don't think it ever really came up as an issue
As when i hung out at a friend house, we had either eaten before getting there, or gone home anyway before it was time to eat again

It's reassuring that it's not really the case, however I'm still gonna laugh a the Insta posts of Americans claiming they spent the night at a friend's house whose parents came from the region and how they just ate dinner without inviting them or even taking them into consideration.

The one I remember best is a girl talking about how her friend said "I'll be right back", and after 30 minutes or so she wonders where she went so she goes down the stairs from her room, to see her friend and her family eating dinner lol.

According to my Swedish cousins, reading it as poor hospitality is just wrong.

The assumption is that kids will eat later with their families, so stuffing them full of food beforehand is just inconsiderate.

in my family we invited my friends to eat with us, some of my friends invited me to join for dinner when I was visiting them as well, but I had several friends who went to eat dinner while I sat alone in their room waiting, playing games, watching cartoons or whatever until they came back

I feel it was close to 50/50 overall
