idk how I dodged it this long. I haven't even touched the character creator yet, but I'm thinking either a monk or a spellsword class if they have them.

Anything a 1st timer should know about the game and such? My only DnD experience is KOTOR lol

Monk is fantastic. The game is pretty big so take it slow. Quicksave a lot lol.

You can steal the gold back from the person that let's you respec your character without any repercussions, so don't worry if you make mistakes when building your character.

Try to have your stats at even numbers, as going from an even numbered stat to an odd numbered one doesn't actually provide any sort of boost (for example having 17 Charisma is basically the same as having 16 Charisma, and you'll only see a boost if you were to get up to 18 Charisma). That said, there are some feats (which are new passives you get at every 4 levels of every class aside from fighter and rogue, which get a bonus feat at level 6 for fighter and level 9 for rogue) that provide a +1 to a certain stat alongside another effect, so if you're planning on using one of those feats for a character, it's fine to leave the stat it boosts at an odd number when setting your level 1 stats.

Long rest as much as possible. You will know pretty easily when long resting is bad, such as if you see a house on fire or someone hanging off a cliff or something in need of timely rescue, probably best to not long rest, other than the very few times of that, long rest as much as possible.

Don't attack a goblin leader or Hag until you're level 4. Early levels make a massive difference in this game so don't bang your head against the wall on these bosses

I tried playing this for several hours but eventually just got exhausted of loading previous saves. Maybe I should give it another shot.

It lets me select a penis type but I can't see what it looks like. Wtf game

Hmmm. I did just this and then banged my head against a wall. Should I give the game another shot?

I'm now convinced this game is only popular because of the nudity and sex. I got as far as the city before I couldn't take that terrible combat and camera anymore and deleted that 100+gb to download something else. Already fucked everyone at that point so there was nothing good left.

How do you know you had fucked everyone if you didn't finish the story? There are undoubtedly characters you haven't even met yet

Monks tend to favor a lot of different stats, but I would say you should respec that 14 con into Wisdom. Barbarians get unarmored defense based on Con, but Monks get it based on their Wisdom. Otherwise the 10 int is useful to not be cooked by saving throws

Charisma also isn't super useful on a monk if you're trying to be min maxy but if it's a party face I think it's a great choice!

Also tag. Don't listen to anyone else this game fucking bangs. I have about 200 hours in it and the end is nowhere in sight

Seconding that you should take Tavern Brawler for a Monk.

After you finish the intro and get out of the ship, several of your party members are within immediate walking distance. Won't say more there but explore thoroughly, even if it's say...a strange portal.

To add onto this, I'd also drop INT down to 8 since it's pretty much a useless stat for most classes (Wizard and maybe Arcane Trickster rogues + Eldritch Knight fighters being the only exceptions) and there's very few saving throws that require INT, so it's the go to dump stat for most classes.

Right before you escape the ship, you can get the weapon the general is using by either killing him or preparing Command on shadowheart and making him drop it. Pretty useful early game for the Fighter or you, if you want to use it before you inevitably drop your weapon altogether.

Having a weapon at all after level 4/5 as a monk is just usually not worth it. They love unarmed attacks.

It's a marvelous game with dozens upon dozens of hours of content for a single playthrough, with replay value like crazy because of all the different classes, subclasses, and story choices available.

Your starting party basically includes all the origin characters, yes. You find a few of them early, then a couple more a short while later. They all come pre-loaded with a class, but you can respec them as well if you like. Just keep in mind that respeccing them to a totally different class might lock you out of class-specific dialog options down the road.

I respec'd my Shadowheart to Tempest Cleric because Call Lightning is just so damn cool.

Just giving a warning I wish I had for Act 1.

Laezels gonna want to take you to her crche to get the tadpole removed. When you get there, shell volunteer to go into the extraction machine first. You should probably go first, because the character getting extracted will have to make some saves that if they fail, will give them permanent negative ability score modifiers for the rest of the game. Its easier for your character to pass these checks. Also you get a permanent buff to your illithid abilities. The game wont tell you about the penalties either.

Spoilered it just in case, but not knowing this made me not want to use a character in my main party.

In fairness, there's a bunch of stuff in the world that warns you about that, iirc. I do agree that you should always go first though.

Yes the game really opens for you after level 4 and 5. Those bosses are practically impossible at level 3 without some kind of cheese.

When you find a dank ass crypt, make sure to explore it. Also when you get the option to respec, do it immediately on your wack ass teammates.

that's not really true in any noticeable way.
maybe it was gonna be a thing but was cut, or maybe it's more of an abstract thing.

i only mention this cause i was scared of using that stuff in the beginning,
but the only thing stopping you it is your own roleplay decisions for that

It affects one of your dice rolls at the end of the game. If you don't want your character's appearance to change, I wouldn't do it TC.
