BG takes place in the area based on western Europe. There are places based on China and Japan, Middle East, ancient Mexico.... Having followed the game and its datamines from early access there were pretty obvious huge rewrites sometime after 2021 and some of then seemed to happen pretty late, devs were talking about the Upper City and how amazing it was to explore just a few months before it came out and then at release that was almost completely cut out and a bunch of parts of the story had to be adjusted to compensate.
