Hunter Elward, a former Mississippi sheriffs deputy who faced the most serious of federal charges against him and five other officers in the torture of two Black men last year, was sentenced to 20 years in priso nin a highly emotional hearing Tuesday.

He pleaded guilty in August to federal charges of discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence, conspiracy against rights, deprivation of rights under color of law, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and obstruction of justice related to the January 2023 incident.

n a lawsuit, the victims Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker alleged the officers illegally entered their home and handcuffed, kicked, waterboarded and tased them and attempted to sexually assault them over nearly two hours before one of the deputies put a gun in Jenkins mouth and shot him.

Some of the officers called themselves The Goon Squad because of their willingness to use excessive force and not report it, federal prosecutors said.
Elward addressed the victims directly in court during his sentencing hearing.

Im so sorry, the disgraced former officer said. I dont want to get too personal with you, Michael. Theres no telling what youve seen. Im so sorry that I caused that. I hate myself for it. I hate that I gave you that. I accept all responsibility.

Jenkins nodded. Parker stood up and replied: We forgive you, man.

I fear I will be attacked again and even killed

Elward was sentenced in Jackson before Southern District of Mississippi US District Court Judge Tom Lee.

Elward also pleaded guilty in August to state charges of conspiracy to commit obstruction of justice, home invasion and aggravated assault. He awaits sentencing on the state charges.

During a victims impact statement read by his attorney, Parker said he believes the crime will haunt him forever.

The very bad actions of the Rankin County Goon Squad severely impacted me and left a scar on me forever, Parkers statement said, as read by attorney Malik Shabazz. I dont know if I will ever be able to sleep at night. I fear I will be attacked again and even killed.

Shabazz also read a statement from Jenkins, who said, I dont think Ill ever be the person I was.

The human capacity for forgiveness is impressive.

The guy who helped stop the My Lai massacre in Vietnam was a Helicopter Pilot named Hugh Thompson. When he and the surviving member of his crew went back decades later the people there asked him why the men who had committed the atrocities had not come back with him so that the people there could forgive them.

So I looked up the original CNN article that went into more detail and holy shit. 20 years is not long enough. These guys are psychopaths.

Jenkins and Parker were handcuffed when the deputies, who had turned their body-worn cameras off, began punching and slapping them, according to the lawsuit. Throughout the nearly two-hour ordeal, the six deputies would punch and beat two handcuffed men at will, hurting and humiliating both Jenkins and Parker. Deputies also repeatedly and gratuitously kicked the men as if they were animals while they lay subdued and handcuffed, the lawsuit says.

Additionally, the deputies waterboarded Jenkins and Parker by continuously pouring the liquids on their faces while both men were handcuffed and forced on their backs, according to the lawsuit.

During these acts, the deputies used vicious racial slurs, including the n-word and monkey and accused them of dating White women, the suit alleges.

In their repeated use of racial slurs in the course of their violent acts, (the deputies) were oppressive and hateful against their African- American victims. Defendants were motivated on the basis of race and the color of the skin of the persons they assaulted, the lawsuit states.

The lawsuit also alleges that multiple deputies attempted to use a sexual device against Jenkins and Parker, threw eggs at them and forced them to shower together.

The deputies had custody and control of Jenkins and Parker during the incident, and neither of the men resisted or tried to run from the deputies, the lawsuit says.

Despite their compliance, deputies placed their guns to the heads of both handcuffed men and threatened to kill them.

As the assault reached its peak, the lawsuit alleges, a deputy placed a gun in Jenkins mouth and shot him, lacerating his tongue and shattering his jaw.

After Jenkins was shot, he was severely injured, left alone to care for and treat himself as he stumbled out the door and fell, the suit says.

For twenty or more minutes, each deputy consciously and deliberately disregarded their specific duty to render medical attention, the lawsuit says. When emergency medical personnel arrived, Jenkins was taken to a hospital and underwent multiple surgeries, the lawsuit states.

Daniel Opdyke, the third of six former Mississippi law enforcement officers who pleaded guilty in the torture of two Black men last year, was sentenced by a federal judge Wednesday to more than 17 years in prison.

The former Rankin County Sheriffs Office deputy pleaded guilty in August to federal charges of conspiracy against rights, deprivation of rights under color of law, conspiracy to obstruct justice, and obstruction of justice related to the violent attacks in January 2023.

The judge also ordered Opdyke to undergo mental health treatment, including for anger management, as well as alcohol and drug treatment. The ex-deputy was also ordered to pay $79,500 in restitution to the victims.
