They were free on the battle pass so you had to grind them out or pay money to unlock them early. After the battle pass ended you could unlock them by playing a certain number of games. So yeah they were already free but this is removing the grind of unlocking. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Overwatch 2 about 5 times so I think I'm done for good now. Not that it matters. MTX becoming free later on happens all the time in games.
