I used to be a Walter White simp, sadly. Would try to explain his motivations and all. Then he just blurted it out and was like....what a fucking asshole.

"The road to hell is paved with good intentions " is a phrase for a reason. You can start something for what seems to be good reasons at the time and go some dark places that aren't good at all, places that even negate any original goodwill you might have once had.

I only remember that one time he was in a basement about to be gunned down and rather than the guys actually doing it one of them allowed him one phone which he immediately uses to tell his goon to go kill their boss, rather than shooting Walt on the spot one goon runs off hoping to try and stop it while the other one has a real stupid conversation with the guy who just put a hit on his boss and was already suppose to kill that ends with him letting him go, the boss getting killed anyway and some other nonsense.

Plot armor is a thing but this was just absurd

Well, you caught the whole thing he discussed in that episode..... there's only two people that could run the operation, Walt or Gale. One had to be alive or Gus's entire operation would go down the drain.

But I agree there was a bit of contrivance there. The fact he didnt kill jesse.

I believe Walt told Gus that if he kills Jesse, then he won't cook for him

Yes, and at that point in time, Gus needed Gale or Walter to run the lab. Walter had Gale killed, so he had no choice to keep Walt around.

Thats why I agreed with you in that keeping Jesse alive was a contrivance. Killing Walts family would be enough of a threat to keep him around.

But damn if the Jesse plotline didnt make for good tv that season. If a contrivance helps the story, so be it

The biggest contrivance to me is Gus deciding to threaten Walt's family in the desert. Like, I'm pretty sure Jesse isn't going to cook for you if you kill Walt's entire family too. And then Gus decides to just skip the middle man and kidnap Jesse to force him anyway.
Another huge contrivance I've felt is that Walt's family besides the cop actively fighting against the cartels was never really directly threatened at any point despite everyone around him getting destroyed including Jesse's loved ones twice. The fact that Walt is actually able to get away with getting his family millions of dollars at the end is just so lame to me. Should've been unable to get them anything or have someone like Skylar or Walt Jr. die just to show how much he fucked his own family over by getting into cartel crime for his own ego.
