All I've heard about him through the stuff with Destiny is he barely makes arguments and basically does a whole Argument from Authority thing because he doesn't actually have points, or is afraid of his points being pieced apart.

Like 99% of academics he's an expert on one specific thing which he undeniably is right about, and wildly wrong on the other things he isn't an expert on.

This is the standard anti-American tankie position.

There was a big dispute in the Clinton administration in the 1990s about whether to expand NATO eastward. A good number of people in Clintons inner circle including then Secretary of Defense Bill Perry opposed NATO expansion, because they rightly predicted then that the Russians would see the move as a threat.

Others, including President Bill Clinton and the then NSA advisor believed that NATO expansion was a good thing, on account of spreading freedom and democracy; they miscalculated in that they believed that Russia would view the US as a benign hegemon.

In 1999, Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary joined NATO, ushering in first wave of NATO expansion. In 2004, several Baltic states including Slovenia, Bulgaria, among others joined NATO. In 2008, things came to a head, when it was proposed that Georgia and Ukraine be added to the NATO alliance.

The Russians made it categorically clear then that it was a move that would lead to the destruction of Ukraine. Political and Intel leaders including Angela Merkel and Nicholas Sarkozy and then CIA Director William Burns rejected the move because they (rightly) believed that Putin would view it as a declaration of war. In 2014, Professor John Mearsheimer wrote an article outlining the risks posed by NATO expansion.

Instead of backing down, the US and NATO continue to double down, culminating most recently in Finland and Sweden joining; further sparking tensions with Russia.

What is happening in Ukraine is a tragedy; make no mistake about it. However, a realist look at the history of what sparked the current conflict is appropriate here.
