Resident Evil 5 is actually the Resident Evil most in need of a remake. A whole new environmental structure and scenario design that reigns in the action and dials up the horror would bring it in line with capcom's of remakes but all of this doesn't account for Resident Evil 5's most notorious problem: Racism.

All in set in a fictional West African country Resident Evil 5's primary antagonists are black people. Yes it's technically the Oroborus virus that protagonist Chris Redfield is fighting but the parasite's host is depicted as a nation of mobs and Primitives who are violent even before their infection. Intentionally or not Resident Evil 5 positioned Africa as the Dark Continent an uncivilized World harboring a diseased population that needs gunning down via Western intervention in the name of Global Security.

This insensitive treatment of people of color was hotly debated even as early as Resident Evil 5's debut trailer with writers such as eni croll and Steven totillo pointing out the game's uncomfortable postcolonial imagery the arguments and think pieces continued well into the game's release window with IGN's own former editor-in Chief Hillary Goldstein having also wrestled with the subject but that was 2009 a time when race was apparently a debate rather than a reality.

In the 2020s in a post black lives matter World there is only one acceptable response to a white man shooting waves of Africans for an entire video game: "No."

There is one thing I do. I have a job to do and I'm going to see it through remakes may be able to redefine their Source material but there's only so many changes you can make until it's not a remake at all but an entirely new game and if you take Africa out of Resident Evil 5 is it Resident Evil 5 anymore even with a vastly improved more sensitive take on the continent, perhaps one with a black protagonist and a more empathetic look at the outbreak The Experience would simply be too divorced from the original to hold the name Resident Evil 5.

So where does Capcom go now? Personally I'd look backwards code Veronica is an ideal candidate as is the original Resident Evil but if the only way is chronologically forward then a total rewrite of what comes next is the logical path because what followed Resident Evil 4 was not one terrible game but two.

Resident Evil 6 double down no triple down on the action-packed setpiece heavy shooter design to the extent that much of it could be mistaken for a third person Call of Duty spin-off were it not for the monsters its restrictive level design practically puts you in a choke hold forcing you to endure a barrage of bombastic moments that have no interest in evoking any sense of fear Resident Evil 6 is a survival horror only in that it's a horrible game that you have to survivelaying but this time around it doesn't have to be like that.

Capcom now has the opportunity to ignore the past and completely reinvent this chunk of the timeline. In Resident Evil 4 remakes post-credit scene evil mastermind Albert Wesker details his plans for world domination to ad Wong reflected in his glasses is an image of excel gon and the stairway of the sun two significant plot.

Elements from Resident Evil 5 which indicates capcom's intentions butthere's more to consider this scene is largely a replication of the sequence from assignment ADA a non-canon chapter from the original Resident Evil 4 it shift from unofficial to Cannon points to a willingness to change furthermore the end of this scene is completely

Rewritten when learning of wesker's plans rather than dutifully deliver the stolen last plaga sample to to him Ada betrays her shadowy boss and forces her helicopter to turn around. In this moment unclear Capcom has given itself the freedom to do whatever it wants I just hope it's not a remake of Resident Evil 5

Could do with another draft on that bit.

Edit: okay, the tribal grass skirt thing can go.

How is it racist? LOCAL villagers are infected and they happen to be black. By that logic wouldnt RE4 be racist since protagonist is American and ganado are all spaniards? Sure, the optics are problematic since you have an all white, American hero killing Africans, but that stems from our own real world racial problems through history. The real problematic thing were the native guys.

At the end they added people of every color to the game and Capcom bowed to never make decisions like this again without consulting Capcom of America.

here's a more accurate post about what's in the game about how the enemies were dressed later on:

https://residentevil.fandom.com/wiki/Village_Youth%27s_Diary

Outside I saw a man who looked strange. He was naked and had a weapon. His entire body was covered in war paint. It wasn't even festival day.

I tried to talk to him, but when he turned around, I saw his face...

He didn't even look human!

What is happening to the people of my village!?

The screaming has stopped since yesterday. The men are all dressed like our ancestors and fighting each other. Most of the women have died.

In the original trailer Chris wasn't on steroids and there was no Sheva and it depicts stuff that doesn't even happen in the game.

People also tried to claim they added Sheva due to backlash. People don't seem to realize that those trailers are made well in advance and the game was already super into development. They didn't add Sheva or White Zombies because people moaned on Facebook

Correct. The tribe in RE5 were generational descendants of the original tribe that discovered the Progenitor Virus, and guarded it from outsiders.

I believe it was Tricell that would later take advantage of their isolationism and infect them with Uuroboros under the guise of it being a vaccine. Fucked up, yes, but not racist.

The IGN article is also laughably stupid, and sounds like it was made by a Zoomer whose never actually played the game. There's no mention of Sheva, or her team, (both of which are black, and have awesome moments alongside Chris) to say nothing of how RE4 and 6 somehow get a pass for not being insensitive to Spainards and Russians (and Chinese).

This is just a case of a white knight, white knighting. RE5 was fine when it came out, and it will be fine being remade today. It's not racist to have people of color portrayed in an antagonistic light, and in RE5's case, the African population is only antagonistic because of Wesker and Tricell's involvement.

Plus if you want to go down that route Wesker, Spencer and Irving all look like they have never spent a day outdoors and their models could be used as Vampires in a Vampire The Maqurade game.

While they are the evilest people in the entire plot.

"Yeah but let's examine the skin tone of the characters and compare it to their morality" is such a weird mentality even before you into the zombie mutation.

we have in-game documentation that it's not how they acted/dressed (outside of festivals) before infection.

it would be like, if the game was set in Mexico, for example, and the enemies started wearing mariachi outfits, because reasons.

the game meant that they chose to dress that way, for some reason.

*edit: also, it happens throughout a span of time, when there is no festival

the real world reason is most likely that it's "identifiably" African, and the developers thought it looked cool, but it could have been written differently to justify it.

like, maybe have them live in a legitimately remote area (we have tribes like this in South America, India, etc.), so it would make sense, or have them be some kind of traditionalists.

but the game's like, "idk"

I think his post is coming more from the point of view that the one time we have a black character in a main character role her skin was light enough that it sets off that "but not too black" tvtrope kind of thing. The unfortunate implication that if she is too dark game sales could possibly lower a bit in certain regions, basically the ol' hollywood type of thinking.

https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ButNotTooBlack

We have plenty of black characters that help out in npc roles, is part of a ensemble playable character cast like with the RE outbreak games or make it in as DLC like josh did, but I still don't think we will be getting that sole black MC RE game anytime soon.

I think a remake could keep the same setting and the same general story. But there are things that should be changed or removed.

I don't think the people at Capcom intended for anything in RE5 to be racist. It came off to me like they were taking things from western media that seemed interesting without fully understanding the context behind it and how some of that imagery would come across to an audience outside Japan. I would want them to be more cognizant about those kinds of things with a remake.
