Thats actually an interesting point, and definitely something that Ive considered but its not what were discussing. Whether or not a ban is restricting TikToks (and by extension its owners) freedom of speech is certainly an important and relevant issue, but were talking about abridging the rights of TikToks users. Personally Im more concerned about the rights of people than the rights of corporations, but its certainly up for debate.

Yeah, that's perfectly fair, TikTok's users are certainly not entitled to use the site. Any site takedowns are based around whether the site has crossed any lines that violates their right to both the free market and just to exist. Personally, if anything comes out of this I think increased privacy regulations would be good for all sites.

That's an ideal but it's not very feasible when there are such differing laws across all the countries. Copyright harsh countries vs laxer countries is a prominent one.

I haven't read through this whole thread, however typically people don't even express why they fear China having access to this data, they just lose their mind at the mention of China and attach it to some nebulous fear that exists from merely the word itself.

What exactly are people fearing they're going to do with this data? Know who people are? Steal their identity for AI/propaganda purposes? Take out a loan in their name? Come to their house and execute them in the middle of the night?

I agree with you, however to some, the enemy you know is easier to deal with than the enemy you don't.

Displaying a flag at city hall refers to the manner, sure, but I thought you were talking about specifically the pride flag, not just any flag, because otherwise why would you mention the particular type of flag? Perhaps I misunderstood you. Restrictions on flying any flag at the steps of city hall is a type of place and manner restriction, but there are three prongs to the test I mentioned earlier. This general flag ban in your hypothetical would not pass the second prong of such a test. A specific ban on the pride flag would not pass the first prong.

Do you have anything I could read about the internet being a traditional public forum, or do you not hold yourself to the same standard you demand of me in this discussion? Its the first interesting point youve made so far, and Id like to know where youre coming from.

I think its only good if social media in general is treated the same. If TikTok, Twitter, Facebook etc all are judged the same, fair and good. If its only TikTok then this is bad

If youre restricting pride flags but not other types of flags, that is not a time/place/manner restriction, that is a content-based restriction. Some flags are allowed while a specific one isnt. Thats a different standard.

As far as that court case is concerned, Im not convinced. The restriction there prevented the sex offenders from accessing any social media, so it fails the 2nd and 3rd prongs of the test. Ive never heard of the internet being considered a traditional public forum in this sense but its not an option unreasonable argument to consider. Any better examples than this one?

This is the real reason. Anyone can post anything on Tiktok and have it go viral in hours even if they don't have any followers. With other platforms you need like 10-50k subscribers/followers to get any video any kind of attention. Lots of things go viral on Tiktok. Racists getting exposed, hit and run scum getting recorded and caught not too long after a video of their car with license plate visible is posted, people doing good deeds or exposing politicians. You rarely see this on non Tiktok platforms except maybe twitter but twitter is less organized. And people want to see this kind of power that ordinary have banned?

most problems we have today, from the radicalization of the republican party around trump to the re-emergence of nazis and anti-semites as major threats, are caused by social media

Nah, for one a lot of Dems do use TikTok to reach younger voters (Republicans do, too, however Dems were quicker to it) and even if they didn't young people who love tiktok will be bitter over the loss of it.

Them not voting could ultimately give the election to Trump since their demographic is more likely to go Dem when they participate.
