I wouldn't think it'd be Zuko, however if I had to say so it'd be because his endless quest for "honor" is a distraction from his closeted feelings and he's trying to project his ideal self to everybody while denying who he really is.

However if I had to actually say someone, I'd say Toph.

None of the main cast, very evidently, but fair odds that you could work in some headcanon with the Kyoshi Warriors.

But that's irrelevant because you're asking about the start of the series, which means when discussing that you can't use future stuff to talk about stuff that happened in the first part. You can't use a sequel as justification to discuss the first installment when the first installment was not taking the sequel into account. If you want to talk about TLA then we're talking about TLA, which means discussions about who they were in TLA, not based on who they become as adults.

I don't remember everything he does, but I don't doubt he shows interest in a woman at some point. P sure he flirts with a woman insincerely at some point with an ulterior motive, but that's all I know.

Maybe Bumi? I don't remember him having any kids. He's theatrical, putting on a whole game and show for Aang when he arrives in the city. Loves his pet rabbit and baby talks it.

Also, fun fact about the Fire Nation: gay marriage is outlawed because Sozin had a sister he hated named Zeisan. Zeisan was kind of a dissonant, working against Sozin's government with a group of renegade Air Nomads called the Guiding Wind. She also fell in love with an Air Nun named Rioshon.

I mostly just think it'd be cool and kind of fit thematically with his character. And also he could get together with Sokka <_<

But I also I never quite bought him and Mai as a couple. It makes sense that they're not the most demonstrative people, but their relationship comes across as somewhat shallow. Especially on Zuko's end because Mai did at least betray Azula for him.

But I understand this is just because there wasn't much time to spend on fleshing them out, I don't think any of the main cast in TLA were actually meant to be LGBT.

If they did decide to do a retcon though, I feel like Zuko would be in the running.

Weirdly enough, you actually are pretty close to reality there. While the cabbage merchant appears to have been straight, since he has an identical-looking and -sounding son (named Lau Gan-Lan) in The Legend of Korra, his voice actor, James Sie, is gay (and married). You might also know Sie from his performance as the animated version of Jackie Chan in Jackie Chan Adventures.

But that could very much being an Ace character trying to fit it.

Ace and gay teenagers will still go on dates and fake attraction to the opposite sex while growing up to fit in with the crowd. I went on dates, I had physical attraction to girls (which I realize now was me appreciating the ascetic appearance) when I was a teen. I did it because everyone did it. I didn't even realize I was ace until I was nearly thirty. And looked back on everything though that context.

So showing attraction and trying to date someone isn't concrete evidence that somehow is straight. Hell a good sociopath needs to be able to fake things. Azula is a sociopath.

Azula definitely shows the least overt sexuality of the cast. Whereas basically everyone says or does something to show some level of heterosexual attraction.

The closest we get from Azula is the beach episode and it mostly comes off as her being competitive with Ty Lee, which frankly has its own subtext.

That said, I'd be shocked if a single AtLA character was intended to be gay. Nick in the early 2000s just wasn't there yet. Even with LoK the kinda stumbled into Korra/Asami by accident and it wasn't the initial intention.
