One thing I am glad for is not a longer having to go to the care home to watch my father waste away as diabetes and muscle atrophy do their job. Also, thankful he wasn't sick that long. A month is virtually nothing in the grand scheme of debilitating illnesses. He recognized everyone, cheerfully called out to all of his favourite people, recognized my family immediately, and was always happy to see us. If you asked him how he was doing, he would say "Well...", then trail off and go back to watching TV. He was very surface level cognizant towards the end. Neither of us talk really - just sit there and watch whatever's on TV. At least he was well insulated when it comes to his death and funeral things. Enough money to cover that and some government stipends that we can dip into. Already had a plot paid for. We aren't doing a viewing or any real funeral type proceedings in a church. We're going to wait until the weather is nicer and have a barbecue in my sister's backyard as a celebration of life. I think he'd like that more than just fucking triangle sandwiches, cheese, and deli meat. He wasn't a pious man, and didn't stand on ceremony.
