This is the best cast Jesse Tannenbaum has assembled, unseating 42's.
45 is better than both of them. Emily, Bruce, Jake, Kellie, Katurah, Kaleb, Sabiyah and Kendra are all top tier. Dee is a perfectly fine winner and she and Austin both have their moments. Even my least-favorite on paper, Drew, is a fun villain to root against. Then you've got some entertaining early boot trainwrecks, it's just a really top tier group and the only new-era season that's in my top 10 seasons overall.

then again when i say "like" i mean "like" in the same way there are annoying people i know irl who i conceptually like but hate actually being around

but i also don't want to know what any survivors are posting on social media, really. i feel like the social media clout and "becoming part of the survivor family" are sort of related to the "its all just a game, i don't even get hurt when i'm voted out" attitude from recent years and i just want people to go on survivor because of the game, not to get followers. shoutout to rocksroy for being the only cast member on 42 without a twitter. (idk if anyone else since then hasn't had one lol)

That's so sad to hear about Sonja. She was, prior to her passing, the oldest living former castaway (unless I'm forgetting someone that title now belongs to Jake Billingsley), the first Survivor contestant ever voted out, and the recipient of the most legendary misspelled vote in Survivor history. R.I.P. Souna.

I'm actually still kinda surprised it won't be until 50. I thought they might finally go for it at 48 - I mean that'd match All-Stars timing but for the "New Era". They're gonna have a lot of players to pick from.

New Era casting has actually been really great - the issue was too many people are of similar life background and philosophy on how to play Survivor, but each of the people individually have been great choices for the most part.

My double unpopular opinion is that a) I don't like returnee seasons much anyway so I'm glad there's less (I think the essence of Survivor is 16 strangers figuring each other out, and returnee seasons with pre-gaming and legacies just isn't the same, though they can be very fun) but b) I actually think a new era returnee season is more interesting as a concept, because of how the new era has become so... y'know, its all 18 superfans with the same meta, with this "no hard feelings" attitude that makes it feel like a casual board game night, so i wanna see just how much they can push this metagame now that they have experience under their belts

Yeah that's fair. I DO think Micronesia and HvV are a little overrated but I think it was fine to have returnee seasons at those points in the series (Micronesia was season 16 to All-Stars being 8, and HvV for S20 was expected). But from 21-34, literally half of all seasons had returnees in some form and many of the returnees were either highly questionable choices or "here's CBS's current golden child for the 80th fucking time and if you're sick of seeing him you're not a real Survivor fan" and it got ANNOYING. Having an All-Star season every 7-10 seasons that consists mostly/entirely of people from that set of seasons is honestly ideal and it seems like that might be what 50 is going for. Like, now that we've really chilled on returnee seasons for a while, getting a season with like, Shan/Emily/Jonathan/Carolyn/Jesse/etc all together is going to feel as fresh and fun as seeing the HvV cast did.

I think it's probably even harder now to have a returnee season that isn't full of "pre-gaming" too, since I get the sense that recent casts tend to socially interact even more than before thanks to social media and stuff. If the wider pool helps them pick a spread of people who aren't as well-connected outside of the game, that's a good thing.

And yeah, even if some of these seasons weren't the most exciting, the idea of seeing Shan and Emily and Carolyn and Jesse and etc all on the same season together is, like, actually really hype. I also think the New Era presents some good opportunities for pre-merge returnees, since the skill level of the casts these days is much higher, even people who went pre-merge didn't always play that badly.

The edits have gotten so much better at making everyone stand out, from 41-46 there are MINIMUM 6 or 7 people per season that I could feasibly see being considered for All-Stars. So the pool of realistically potential returnees is pretty large.

Kenzie talking about resume differentiation shows her priorities are all mixed up. She's trying to make "BIG MOVEZ" but they're wrong moves. Stand out by being the one to make a move that's more advantageous for her than for Tiff, and make sure her fingerprints are all over it. (This means NOT taking out Tiff, just doing something to give Kenzie something Tiff doesn't have.)

This season is so good. It's really delivering everything we want from Survivor. Unintentional comedy, variety of contestant personalities, sloppy play like crazy, a little more variety...

...this is all from Liz's perspective, which is interesting. I don't think she's winning since she was nearly invisible for a few pre-merge episodes and this is ridiculous, certainly not good for her jury status. Her conniption here means her winning would be the most insane thing to happen in ages.

Also, sucks that they couldn't bring a burger back to give to Liz. Old school allowed that. Probst would never.

yeah, it's much better for them to get Tiff out and take Quitavius to the F3. A Venus/Liz/Quitavius F3 would be the funniest of all time. Like we've had all-goat F3s before, but that one would be on another level of hilarity.

That said, Venus has hardly been in this episode, so it's very apparent this is not her story. I no longer think she's the dark horse to win.

Ben does have a music cue - the guitar - and that's noticeable enough to add something, but that's editing. Siga was the least fun tribe this season because they were too exemplary of "New Era" kumbayah cheerleading bullshit. Yanu was a total trainwreck and Nami was a hugely successful tribe that still fought all the time.
