Rogue Trip was where it was at.

Also I thought the streaming series was a minor hit.

I feel like we're finally catching up to the slow-turning "aircraft carrier style" course of the gaming industry. The latest batch of big Live Service game attempts have pretty much all failed in miserable fashion (as anyone could have predicted).

Maybe now we'll get fewer trash games that are obviously doomed to fail.

I always feel bad for the devs involved when projects get canceled after so much resources and effort have been invested, regardless of what kind of game it is. The companies are realizing the live service model is a bust more often than not, and the devs are paying the price.

I assume it was that the team making the game were among the recent layoffs at Sony and shared what they were working on instead of some official cancelation announcement

why do they keep trying to fuck the formula? a normal twisted metal game will still sell, they just have to make it like all of the previous good iterations. small stories, multiple drivers, great art. it's really not so difficult. the problem is their attempt to milk the shit out of skins and weapon upgrades and all that unnecessary bullshit.

This sounded like a shitty live service game anyway but still feels strange because the Twisted Metal stream program wasn't a flop.

Rogue Trip bro! I uhh never got into Vigilante 8 it felt off for some reason. Quickly.....the devs who made tm2 (Singletrac) I forget why just left the IP with Sony.

So they made Rogue Trip which felt like Twisted Metal 2 but with a ton of gimmicks. While TM3 felt all wrong and a new crappy engine. TBF I think Twisted Metal 4 was good.

I remember when these kinda games were such a big fad in the 90s and early 2000s. Died off so hard.

When even was the last one that succeeded?

The problem with game developers now that they want to make AAA games and turn big profits, no one wants to make a small to medium budget game with moderate profit anymore, especially on an established franchise.

Twisted Metal Black was really difficult and I don't think I was as depressed when it came out. Twisted Metal:Head On was cool I had that for the PSP and still have the Extra Twisted edition for PS2.

Maybe this is my own bias, but I think most people prefer Twisted Metal: Black to the older titles and that was on PS2. There were a few handheld titles after that which I think did alright.

It is weird to me that this particular genre niche hasn't really been attempted though. Like not even necessarily a single-player "campaign" with goofy and/or fucked up stories like TM had, just a vehicular arena combat game.

Part of the problem is that people also aren't really buying them.

Like the industry has been absolutely brutal to games focused around cars for the last 20 years. Racing games used to be a reliable genre which is why we used to have so many of them. That died out in the 360 generation.

I think stuff like GTA killed off a lot of it. Why spend a lot of money on a limited racing game with a handful of courses when you can race in an open world game. Or at least that's the logic most of the mainstream gaming public seems to have.

Looking it up it looks like the series stuck around the 1-2 million mark for 1, 2, 3 and Black. Then flopped on the PS3.

Sony did try out Destruction All-Stars which I suppose was supposed to be a spiritual successor. That flopped bad. Wonder why they just didn't make that into Twisted Metal? Probably would have still flopped but surely it would have done at least a little better.

Personally I liked Destruction Derby more than Twisted Metal. I didn't really like driving around trying to shoot. I just liked crashing and pushing cars.

That Twisted Metal PS3 game was strange it was basically built around multi-player which does make sense but they also made the few drivers interchangeable with the cars.

Plus there was a helicopter in the game too that could shoot from the sky. There basically was no story just mayhem, mayhem, mayhem!
