If it's a cash tip she can just stuff it in her shoe or something.

yeah she should tell no one. Have had this happen. You tell someone you thought were your friend and then they tell on you.

Depends on whether the restaurant has a tipout/tip sharing policy or not.

yeah i guess so, if it is stated on some board or something that that's their policy. Do you think the policy itself is wrong?

if she's taking an equal split of her co-workers shares, she's basically stealing from them on top of taking an equal share of what they earned.

I don't have an opinion one way or the other on tipout policies.

Due to the way the Tipping system works it is wrong. Those other people depend on tips as well. waitress to get say 100 dollars . Then he better make the tip biggest so after it is split up that is what she gets .

So to be clear I assume this restaurant normally splits tips since the manager is telling her to split it. So she is taking other peoples' tips but also not giving any of hers out.

Also usually people like the busboy who will clean that table get a small cut of the tips and so she's keeping that as well.

Seems like the customer is creating a problem here by saying that in the first place.

That said, if you're the customer in this situation and the other workers just mean nothing to you for whatever reason, you could bypass this by dropping it under the table and claiming you saw it fall out of her pocket before you hand it to her.

You'll know what happened and she'll know what happened, but so long as you stick to your story, those other folks can't lay any claim to that money because it was always hers.

Had a guy do this to me when I worked at the grocery store... we weren't supposed to accept tips and I told him this and then he insisted, saying he saw it fall out of my pocket and he just stuck the money in my shirt pocket.

It depends on what the normal policy is.

If they share all tips, its fine.

However, I did once work somewhere where we kept all our own tips, and once when I had a particularly high earning day, it was suddenly suggested that we should pool our tips. That wasnt going to happen.

Either you go into the shift knowing that you will share tips, or you dont share them.

This was event catering. I used to do the silver service tents at Goodwood and Ascot and places like that. A few times a year, but you could easily make over a thousand pounds per day in tips. Most people would earn 800-1200. On the occasion in question, I took just over 5k home with me.

Did they try to fire you though after you refused? You thought they were totally wrong?

They couldnt fire me. We were employed on a casual basis for a day or two at a time. The agency didnt even pay us. Just sorted transport and uniforms, which they claimed was equal in value to minimum wage.

But yes, I did think they were totally wrong. Id seen other people earn more than me on previous occasions, but I never expected them to share. We all went in with the understanding that our tips were ours. Its all we were there for.

Yup. If its cash then it goes right into the pocket, if they leave it on the card well thats going to everyone. not everyone, but whoever gets tipped out at the end.

If the restaurant does not have a tip pool it is federally illegal to be told what to do with your tips.
