Google Maps or Apple Maps will literally tell you the exact directions you have to go to get somewhere. Before smartphones you had to use MapQuest or whatever and print out directions, which was a bit more tedious especially if you were driving by yourself

Before that people had to use paper maps? Good Lord...

Think about how much surveyors appreciate it. Increases their accuracy by orders of magnitude

I still have a road atlas in my car. But I've been keeping one since I started driving. Good habit imo, I've gone days without electricity/internet.

Edit: GPS is top notch now though, I like how entire crops can be done with driverless tractors.

Back in 2016 I used a GPS device and while I was driving in an unfamiliar area in another part of my state, it gave me wrong directions and sent me onto a highway that was apparently closed, because there were no other cars around.

A couple months ago, Google Maps wanted me to go either the wrong way into a one-way street or over the edge of a ramp, to get to the airport.

But those aside, I'm very grateful for having GPS because I would not find my way to places unknown on my own.

The technology is great but the maps are often not kept up to date here. Businesses that closed years ago are still on there, whereas some that opened years ago are not.

It still boggles my mind how people used to drive around the country without GPS or cell phones. If you get lost or break down you are pretty much screwed

While I am glad to have GPS and would not go back. I kind of miss MapQuest. Have a print out of where you need to go was helpful.

GPS is a huge help for me. My sense of direction is awful so unless it's someplace I'm already very familiar with trying to navigate on my own inevitably leads to getting lost.

I only ever do it out of frustration

like, I really, really, REALLY wanted an Orange Julius, closest DQ "is" like 40 minutes away, I ended up being over in that neighborhood. Turns out it's a completely different restaurant now... took pictures and submitted a report right from the parking lot and never did get my Orange Julius :(

Ill report it when I happen across it.

However, sometimes even if you report it, it doesnt change.

This is good because I hate roadmaps.

My ADHD brain finds them irritating and boring and difficult to remember where the fuck you are.
