The stakes are much lower than most Pixar movies and it's lacking a real emotional gut-punch. It manages to be both a compelling romance story and also an allegory for a young child of immigrants without siply delving into the tropes of either of those genres fully. It would've been easy for the movie to say "yeah theres lots of racism here" and just shoe them overcoming that but it's a more nuanced and personal handling of the topic that refers to ones expectations and desires and weighing that against the stability their parents fought to provide. --- This post didn't exist to you until you read it. The romance is cute, but in a friends kind of way. I didn't really get much chemistry between the two (pun not intended), but the standout is the migrant story since that's where I felt most of the heart and good intention of the movie is from.
