Man, I love grilled cheese, but while using different cheese can still be good in a vacuum, comparatively American cheese on buttered bread is just elite. Replacing it with cheddar ruins the whole taste of the sandwich and the texture too....a grilled cheese with american cheese is a 9/10 awesome food, a grilled cheese with cheddar is just not worth the calories

Same for burgers, really, american cheese gives it that cheesy taste that makes it so good.

Cheddar cheese is also too stringy.

I agree that cheddar cheese by itself is too strong in flavor for a grilled cheese sandwich. However a slightly sharp cheddar (not preshredded if you can avoid it) mixed with another cheese like American or Muenster is god tier.

Anyway this is a bad take. American cheese is not good in any context. There are dozens of cheeses you could use instead of American even if you dont like cheddar. And what do you mean by cheddar anyway? Even within cheddar there are so many different options

American is best, but go for the "premium" version of it which costs slightly more. It's very nice. Usually labeled as "Deluxe" or whatever.

American cheese is good, but it's the Kraft singles that I find disgusting.

I'm not a big cheese person, I like it on pizza and pasta and cheesesteaks and that's about it. I do love sharp cheddar on its own though, but I would imagine it's not appropriate for grilled cheese.

Cooper Sharp is an "American Cheese" and it's fantastic. Hands down best cheese to use on cheese steaks. It's also really good on burgers. Probably good with grilled cheese too although I haven't tried yet.

They are referring to the concept of a cheese versus a cheese product. Cooper Sharp is a cheese product and is not cheese.

I have different cheeses for different things. American is a must for grilled cheese my preference for burgers but I will do cheddar sometimes and provolone wasn't bad. Cheddar is also my go to for eating it by itself though mozzerla is damn good too.

For sandwiches I will use American if it's all I got but I prefer stuff like havarti Muenster provolone.

Mac and cheese I prefer the pre packaged velveta stuff but cheddar is good too. I could go on.
