It'll certainly be technologically possible, but it will depend on if there's an actual reason. Robots will probably be able to near autonomously do anything humans would need to do in setting up research bases.

I'm pretty sure it's technologically possible today, we just don't have a rocket that could launch enough mass to support a manned mission. Because it would be a giant waste of money.

I think the biggest problem would be getting off the planet. Not sure if we'd have a solution for that without first sending a bunch of stuff to get set-up, and I'm not sure if that currently exists.

I think so. My guess is it will happen in the next 15-20 years. Maybe 30. But I should still be alive by then.
[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

Plenty. Furthering the pursuit of science and technology as a side effect of going to Mars. Second, providing a means to colonize a new world. In addition, a new world means more resources and space for people to live. The more planets we can colonize, the more likely the human race will prevent extinction. Landing there is just the first step, which is why it should be pursued.

Sailing across the world and finding new land was the first step for humans to advance. Now the final frontier is space and colonizing other worlds.

No.

There are problems yet to overcome, and the cost would be prohibitive.

NASA's trying to say they'll be ready by the 2030s. So we could see it in as little as 6 years.

Back in 1990 or 91 or so, I read that NASA planned a manned mission to Mars in 2000. And I believed it. Its now 2024 and it still hasn't happened. I've become jaded on NASA plans. I think humans will eventually go to Mars, but I'm not sure if it will happen before I die.

Cost is directly related to how safe it is. If you just want it to be "safe enough" then the cost is pretty low.

NASA only gets like $25 billion a year. We've given 3 times that to Ukraine. There's plenty of money to go around.

Land on Mars, almost certainly. Making a return trip is kind of a bigger stretch. Humanity actually forming a colony on Mars will most definitely not happen in my lifetime.

Also, I believe we should focus much, much more on the development of space travel and alternative habitats for humanity. If we wait for humanity to get its shit together, itll be too late and well have too few resources to get out there, basically dooming humanity as sooner or later giant meteor is going to hit Earth, if any of the other thousands of doomsday scenarios doesnt wipe humanity out first. Spreading out into space and creating new colonies at the very least increases humanitys chances of survival.

I mean I believe that they most certainly intend to include a return trip, but there's a ton of stuff that can go wrong in the process, especially considering the fact the launch of a space rocket isn't always guaranteed to be successful, not to mention the fact that if there's a vital malfunction along the way that can't be fixed then and there, there's no way to physically send back-up in time.

Not in the foreseeable future. Nothing to do with technology. Earth passes Mars once every 2 years, at its closest it is 35 million miles away. It would take like 9 months to get there, you would be on Mars mandatory around 5-6 months waiting for a proper time to leave for the 9 month return trip catch earth as it passes the next time around.

No resupplies, no emergency return trips like Apollo 13, earth will be on the opposite side of the sun before you even land on mars.

Robots are the space explorers for the next several generations.

It's different than say like the moon where it's 1/4 the size of earth. Where as Mars is 60%. The moon is airless where mars has a thin atmosphere. So it will be more involved for a return trip. I think it will be a 1 way trip. They either survive or not. Now at some point there will be a full time colony at least 100 years

Our current societal structures are way too capitalistic for that. Not to mention that despite the fact that SpaceX has made groundbreaking achievements so far, it's still a company owned by Elon Musk.

If humanity continues to successfully develop spacefaring technology and colonize other worlds, it seems much more likely that we'd have something like a hypercapitalistic system of trans-governments, like Alterra from the Subnautica game series.

Yeah, 9 months each way. You have a choice of landing on Mars and then leaving immediately, within a couple of hours, or waiting it out like you said.

But it's no big deal. People routinely spend months on the ISS.

I'm skeptical. I remember as a kid in the 90s everyone thinking it was imminent, now 30 years later and still nothing.

"Terraforming" and colonies are purely science fiction at this point.
