Shader compilation stutter happens whenever a game loads in anything new. Most games have not loaded every single thing the game has to offer in a couple of minutes.

It also resets after a driver update and I believe when patched.
Like I mentioned, mk1 handles this different

Yes some games handle them differently. Doesn't change the games that never did anything about it.

Having to sit and wait for shaders to compile when booting up a game isn't exactly ideal either. A big advantage modern consoles have is that immediacy of playing a game exactly where you left it.

At this point we're just going in circles.

Shader compilation and the little stutter you get isn't an issue.

Some ports get bad PC releases that are fixed on "day 1" or shortly after. A bad launch isn't unique to PC either.

It just seems like cope at this point because both Xbox and PlayStation have very few exclusives and PC gaming isn't as inaccessible as it was in the 00s.

Assuming it took 4 years to get to "halftime", another 4 years till the PS6 comes out, that's about the normal life cycle of a PlayStation.

PlayStation was 1996
PS2 was 2000
PS3 was 2006
PS4 was 2013
PS5 was 2020

So 6-7 years is the normal "life cycle" for a PlayStation.
Yeah I don't think they mean there's a PS6 dropping in the fall, so it's much ado about nothing

Back in the PS4 generation it actually felt like it was cost effective to easily leapfrog what the PS4 was doing. Most ports were great. 60fps and IQ was a major improvement for even lower to mid range cards.

Nowadays the gap just doesn't seem worth the cost for the big AAA games. Most games on consoles are 60fps now and look great. Unless you really dislike FSR or want ray tracing there's barely any difference.

PC gaming is still great for bundles, emulation and older games but for the new stuff I don't think it's worth it tbh. I say that as someone with a 3080. Even with that I have to be selective in settings for games like Alan Wake 2 and RE4. The days of just selecting the max and moving on just isn't the case anymore. Kinda felt like I can get what I want from PC gaming with the Steam Deck.

Coming from the guy who tried arguing that a steamdeck was cost effective based on a fire sale of a model that no longer exists and didn't bother looking up what the default price point is.

Oh, and that guy who listed Jedi Survivor as a bad PC Port, that's cope because that game launched like shit on all platforms. Not to mention how 3 out of the 4 games mentioned in that post were from the same publisher. Really makes one think.

If you've been reading this thread enough to say this, you could go find my response to TMOG that qualified it all pretty well. Or just keep repeating something out of context, you do you.

Since we're digging this horse up to beat it some more, here's an example: https://www.tomsguide.com/deals/hurry-steam-deck-hits-lowest-price-ever-in-rare-sale
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/steam-deck-is-valves-best-selling-product-again

If we want to argue what's the best cost per ratio buy, it's a Steam Deck over a Switch any day of the week now. You'll actually see it decrease in price & go on sale unlike the Switch with vastly inferior hardware which always maintains a strict cost & rarely has decent software sales. If you want to be full of yourself & argue that a system that will see at least 4 price drops over the course of two years, compared to a 8 year old system that almost never decreases unless it's just bundled with a game, is the worse option then go for it. Nintendo is known for having a fanbase that always simps & capes for their business decisions that's nothing new. Valve has earned their de facto monopoly on PC & branching into mobile PC gaming, I'll cape for that as long as they keep producing a great product. Some of y'all must still be in 2019/2020 when the Switch was a hot button item with no competition.

Also yeah people have done retrospectives of Jedi Survivor & it's still pretty wrecked on PC, much better on console. You're absolutely lying if you say otherwise.

The table tells you the maximum frequency that you can send across HDMI at the listed resolution with the given spec of communication across the cable.

Bigger # = Better Refresh rate capability at listed resolution
Lower # = Worse Refresh rate capability at listed resolution.

You pick the resolution you want to watch your content / play your game at, then you settle for whatever resolution & refresh rate your (Display can handle / Source can produce).

I would consider a major publisher not giving a shit about the platform an issue with that platform even if it's not the fault of that platform.

Dead Space and Jedi Survivor were great games. Kinda sucks having to miss out or deal with crap because the thing you game on isn't treated like a priority.

It's also not anything particularly new with PC gaming either. You said earlier on that this stopped a decade ago.

What is a refresh rate?

Refresh Rate = How many image frames on a Display/TV can show every second.

Usually, most Monitor/TV Displays have a upper limit.

You usually want to match the Upper Refresh Rate of your Display to be higher for smoother animation of your video feed.

Just wondering, how have you managed to be into gaming for so long and not learned all these basic technical aspects of gaming?

I've heard of PC gamers speak these terms before, so I kind of just relegated it in my mind as belonging to the realm of PCs, not console gaming. So I just never bothered to learn about it. Maybe it's a generational thing, too: for me, going from box TVs to flatscreens, I was only worried about getting my console to run on the TV I was playing on. I didn't care about how to make it look better, or why it was doing what it did. I just accepted it as is.

I guess it's why I laugh at kids who claim they can only play games in 60 fps, because I grew up playing in 30 and find it just fine.

On some games on the PS5, you can play your games at 120 fps if you have the TV & cable to support it.

Once you go 120 fps, you'll never want to go back down to lower refresh/frame rates.

Yeah, I asked my wife to look up some more recent HDMI cables for my PS5 that are capable of 120fps. Doubtful that I have games capable of taking advantage of that, but I figure it'll be nice to future proof a little.

And for the record, my eyes cannot tell the difference between 60 and 120 fps. To me, side by side, they look almost exactly the same.

it's the natural order of things whenever sony or ms are leading console sales between the two of them. one does exceptionally well, gets over confident, does something really dumb that costs them all the goodwill they picked up. then the other swoops in and is like "can you believe they did that dumb shit? well WE don't" and becomes the popular choice again until they themselves do something stupid.

Why are people still pushing this lie?

The hardware upgrades don't matter, games are at a point where they can't rely on pure visuals to sell because "the lighting is better" or "the shadows are more realistic" isn't a selling point versus the leap of SNES to ps1 to ps2, etc. Those days are just gone. Easiest example is Suicide Squad vs Palworld

I'm really confused why people are acting like the PS5 is a flop in this topic.

Even with the downgraded forecast they're still on track to breaking a hardware sales record for PlayStation. No PlayStation console has sold over 21 million in a single year.
