That's an angle I hadn't considered. I think I would still prefer to know, but I see now how the illusion of safety can be a good thing for social mentality.
It isn't really an illusion, the odds of someone carrying here are really that low as to be negligible. (Within certain parameters I'll grant you.)

Legit question. So about guns, even a concealed Derringer in a woman's purse is dangerous enough, right?

If your peace of mind somehow depends on knowing whether everyone else around you is carrying a gun or not, wouldn't it be much safer and easier for you to just simply assume that everyone does and then act accordingly?
I think it's important to note too that just because if it were to be a true thing not everyone will carry, not the whole population. I wonder if as many as 50% of the population would if it were a real thing.

Rather no one carried (except for those with specific job or recreation reasons), but yes.

Open carry can at least be a deterrent and maybe prevent confrontation, concealed almost guarantees escalation.

you have it backwards, open escalates conflict far for worse. By open carrying you ar saying I will shoot you if needed, it gives validation to defending yourself from that person with lethal force.

Concealed serves as a deterrent, but by being unseen, it isnt a factor till used.

but to be honest, most gun related incidents you see on the news are failure of conflict resolution and lack of training.

Unless the open carrier is actively shooting at random, mind your own business and move on.

That's the neat part: they aren't until the moment they are. And then people are already dead.

And people with an itch to show off how big their gun is in public will be, in my estimation, more likely than not to want to prove that to someone in a confrontation.

People who open carry, even in accordance with current law, are not people I'd consider responsible gun owners.

Open carry is a provocation at best, and painting a target on yourself (either for a shooter or for a cop who "mistook" you for a shooter) at worst.

I don't even think citizens should own guns. The 2nd ammendment was a huge mistake

"Bearing arms" wasn't technically about owning a gun as much as wielding it (in part because they had armoriesfor their militias where they trained/well-regulated themselves), in the same way that there's a reason why the Founders chose words like levy instead of declare (for war).

Distinction without a difference in 2024, post-Heller, but anything that involves even a cursory historical examination of the 2A is at this point...

No.

As much as I love old west movies... it's a lot like zombie movies - it's a cool setting for fiction but I wouldn't actually want to live like that.
The funny thing is, that in the old west, a lot of times guns would have to be turned in at the sheriff when coming to town. Or checked when entering certain venues. They knew that letting everybody carry everywhere was a bad idea.

2nd amendment was fine for the time it was created. Not updating the god damn thing was a huge mistake.

No.

Makes you look like a prick.

Vastly increases your chances of being shot.

Believing that you're safe only when everyone is in a Mexican standoff with everyone else is fucking mental.
Yeah I don't understand arguments for open carry.

I treat it like I do riding a motorcycle, I assume at all times that I'm invisible to drivers even if I've locked eyes with them. I will assume everyone has a piece by that same measure, and to react accordingly & avoid incidents since people will pull one out over just about anything. Open carry will give people worse egos imo

Concealed carry? Sure. Open carry? I don't see the point unless your intention is to intimidate people around you.

It's always interesting for me to read the perspectives of people who are rarely around guns. The way they perceive a person as "trying to intimidate people" when they're literally just shopping at the store or pumping gas in their car.

People carry guns for protection, and in 99.99% of all cases, there will never ever be anything illegal done with that gun.

No, I do not. I think the risk of people using it irresponsibly is greater than the need to carry for self defense. Youre not going to stop all crimes from happening, but the idea that a civilian at any given moment has the ability to end the life of someone else in a nanosecond - its not something that people should have to worry about.

Theres been pretty rare instances but when somebody is being a cocky shit and drunk you can get pretty nervous when they've got a gun on their hip. Other instance was a guy that was really chill and amiable guy with a gun on his hip. The comfort levels had enormous differences. also the first guy reminded me of the Columbine shooter with long hair.
