Ghost of Tsushima has a side quest involving a character who suffers from dementia.

This shit scares me. There are recent increasing correlations between dementia and ADHD, and feel like I'm always getting just a bit more forgetful.

My paternal grandfather had dementia. My dad hasn't gotten it yet though. Hopefully he doesn't.

Twitter link made me slightly wary, but the animation is pretty good.

I see that this was a dementia awareness thing. But it was really not a good one. It would be better focusing on PTSD specifically, given the combat past of the hero.

Ah yes. Just because I criticize something, I need to touch grass.

The way it was presented the first half of the animation led me to expect either PTSD specifically, or a hero gone bad and thus that the girl was the primary victim.

But no, criticizing something for only showing what it was at the very END of the art piece is apparently code for "everyone must tell him to touch grass."

It came across as more you criticizing it because he threw a spear which is the most CE thing I've ever seen.

His post was that it "hit hard." I then admittedly made a dismissive initial comment of "oh its twitter thing."

I then indicated that I did in fact actually look at it, and complimented the animation. I at first was thinking "oh, a fantasy animation." Which led me to immediately critique the hero's combat choices. It presented itself as a fantasy battle for the first brief moment, so I judged it at first then.

It then spent most of the rest of the short portraying that it was not, in fact, about just being some awesome dragon slayer guy. Problem was, it initially presented it in a way that made it seem like it was anyone's guess as to whether it was going to become a "Hero gone bad" story, or, as the whole closet thing came about, a "Hero's PTSD" thing. In reflection, a third option was possible too, as, well, the hero literally holed himself in a closet. So it could also have almost have been a "The hero is gay" sort of thing, though I did not pick up that vibe on the first view, and it is not accurate to the message anyway.

But yes, I was not paying attention at the start very well. He did in fact throw a spear and not a sword. Doesn't change the fact that he threw HIS ONLY WEAPON. Just because spears are better for throwing than swords does not excuse this bad combat decision. They would have been better off just giving him an OPArt like an actual rifle.

Yes. PTSD is a form of dementia in a way.

Soldiers can also be exposed to things that cause issues that are less immediate too.

The reason I "care about the weapon" is quite literally simple.

I watched the animation, and typed up thoughts as it progressed.

I then posted the entire series of thoughts without editing.

In short, I did not know it was about dementia until the very end when, and only when, it made it very clear it was about that.

Fuck dementia. Not just for what it does to people but also the stress it puts on their family and caregivers.

I am fortunate none of my immediate or secondary family suffered from it.

One of my friends have been less lucky.

There's a movie about this by Billy Crystal called "Here Today" that's just kind of sad as fuck.

That was beautifully animated, reminds me of those Irish animated movies like Wolfwalkers and Song of the Sea.

But yeah I had to live with my grandma who suffered from Dementia. It was a hard to see her like that, I was just glad when my Aunt told us she at least passed away in her sleep smiling.

Not going to lie, someone getting butthurt over a dementia cartoon explicitly posted by a British Alzheimers institution for not having good fight tactics was not on my CE bingo card for 2024.

I couldn't even start to watch that given the subject matter. My grant aunt was dealing with that before she died and it is just unspeakable.

Yeah, it's thoroughly awful shit. My grandmother had it for the last decade or so of her life and it was absolutely heartbreaking. I think more than anything, this scares me the most about my parents aging.

I heard there have been advances on research for Dementia and I hope it continues to advance.
