Over the weekend, it was claimed that multiple major Xbox exclusives including Starfield, Hi-Fi Rush and Indiana Jones could be released on PS5, as part of a significant strategy shift from Microsofts gaming division. On Monday, it was claimed that Microsoft is even considering bringing the Gears of War franchise to PlayStation.

Although not yet officially confirmed, the reports have led to a major backlash within the Xbox community, including from notable Xbox influencers with large followings, who are unhappy that games previously marketed as Xbox exclusives could be made available on other console platforms.

Timdog, another notable Xbox influencer with 82,000 followers including Spencer, Xboxs marketing leads and the official Xbox account made a more dramatic declaration on Monday, streaming a 7-hour Spaces audio discussion on X under the headline Im not an Xbox fanboy anymore.

Its so easy to see Xbox is killing its hardware and putting a stake in the heart of it by doing this, he said. And theres no going back its dead.

He later tweeted: Xbox could have killed Game Pass, say buy our exclusives and focus on our hardware and thats 100 percent the better idea [than to] SAY LETS KILL EXCLUSIVES AND put Halo on PS5. The outrage would be half of this and guess what you might be back to having a healthy business.

He added: Nothing changes other than I dont support them like I have in past. If you like being lied to thats a you thing. I have a set of standards thats all. Cross them and well I respond.

YouTuber Doc_Dark, a self-proclaimed console war content creator, posted a video in which he sang for three minutes about the situation.

I pray to god that you remember, the beginning of this generation when we had a chance, starts Doc_Darks original song. Everything was lined up, but now it looks like its over, he continued, holding aloft an Xbox Series S console. I shouldnt be crying, but I just cant let it go I cant stop thinking about all the games we shouldve played that we never played.

Xbox influencer, KidSmoove, another X user followed by Xbox executives, changed his Twitter banner to a logo reading, Fuck Xbox.

Xbox is doomed, they wrote. [If theyre] expecting PlayStation and Nintendo to buy Xbox games they are in for a rude awakening.

Elsewhere, some social media users have posted tweets stating that theyre trading in their consoles, with one showing receipts proving they have already done it, despite the reports still being unconfirmed at the time of writing.

In a more disturbing turn unrelated to any of the influencers mentioned in this story, Xboxs senior media manager shared an image showing a message in which an anonymous user wished him harm over the situation.

I enjoy Sea of Thieves on PC but its not as good a pc as once was. So having SoT on PS5 would be welcome.

I understand it in a sense. Those games will probably be more successful on PS5 just like Minecraft and COD. Then why not add more games so they are more successful.

But then it raises the question what's the point of Xbox hardware at all? It's already getting doubled and tripled sales. How much lower can it go before they throw in the towel? Would people who picked Halo and Starfield over God of War and Spider-man feel burned if they could have picked a Playstation and got all of them eventually?

I think it makes sense to see the wind is changing.

But at the end of the day it's just a video game console. If Playstation or PC is the better offer then just buy it and move on with your life. It's not that important.

Tbh they're seeing the writing on the wall that Xbox is probably gonna get Sega'd as they transition into being a third party mega publisher on Playstation, Nintendo and Steam.

I don't really see a long term future for a dedicated Xbox box. They probably don't either. Which is why they're upset.

But like...it's a brand. I'm not going to get upset if some fast food restaurant pivots into selling products at the grocery. When things aren't working they pivot. Not everyone is gonna like it. If they weren't so blindly loyal to a corporation who couldn't give a single shit about them they wouldn't feel betrayed.

Maybe Xbox can transition into being some PC thing. But they haven't really made any steps to transition to that either. I guess we'll see what they come up with. At the end of the day Xbox isn't entitled to having success because they're in the market.

I suppose I understand the concern over the large digital libraries they've accumulated if Xbox does ditch hardware.

i mean... it's a car game. cool. and like the 20th forza game. it's obviously not keeping xbox afloat on its own, and putting it on playstation isn't going to magically turn everything around. people are over the microsoft exclusives for a reason, and they're going to be in for a rude awakening if they really think tired old washed up gears of war 5 or whatever is going to blow up on playstation

I personally disagree. I think there's still enough value and marketability in the "we'll release our games for all the systems but you can get our games much cheaper on Xbox by subscribing to Game Pass" plan that an Xbox console can still exist and do well. Not everyone will be swayed by Sony's exclusives into buying a Playstation at the cost of also paying full price for those mutliplatform games that they could otherwise play much cheaper via Game Pass.

The value of Game Pass will have to be the main selling point going forward, and I think it's a good enough selling point for an Xbox console to survive.

Eh I think they'll do well in the sense that when a game isn't supposed to be some first party banger people can just accept it for what it is. People will check it out for the novelty of it at the very least.

A lot of these games aren't bad. They're just on a platform that hasn't been able to gain any momentum in a decade. I'm sure plenty of Playstation players are lapsed 360 gamers who'd revisit Halo and Gears if given the opportunity.

I don't think they need to turn anything around with this either. They have the money already. They're just tipping the scales to the Call of Duty and Minecraft side and shifting away from the money they make as a platform holder and subscriptions.

This shift is happening precisely because Game Pass subscriptions have plateau'd and Xbox Series console sales are on a downward trajectory. That's going to get even worse if it has less games than Playstation in every way while PlayStation has almost everything. It'll snowball.
