For me the Star Wars OT wins as its own thing, as a personal favorite, but when viewing both franchises across all their offerings, Star Trek wins.

Im not really into sci-fi or a big fan of either of these franchises but as an older person Ill admit I know and liked the original Star Wars trilogy. Dont care for any of the ones made after that and stopped watching them.

I have seen snippets of Star Trek stuff but never watched a whole movie and never watched any of the shows. I only know the Khannnnnnn scream because of making fun of it. Star Trek doesnt appeal to me at all. So I suppose Star Wars gets my vote only because of the original trilogy I grew up on.

But truthfully Ill skip both and just watch Spaceballs over and over again. Love that.

It used to be that they both sucked, but at least Star Wars had a worn and lived-in look. Now they both have that, so they are pretty equivalent.

LOL! WHAT!!!???

Star Trek First Contact is not only the greatest Star Trek movie ever but one of the best Sci-Fi movies ever.

But then again rubbish much like this is what I should expect from someone who would rather watch those utterly rubbish in name only streaming series which I wouldn't watch for all the Gold Pressed Latinum on Ferenginar than watch Star Trek: Enterprise which rips apart all those rubbish streaming series.

As for the topic at hand Star Trek rips apart the utterly rubbish Star Wars in every conceivable way possible.

If were not counting Disney Star Wars, Star Wars. I cant buy Star Trek at all, as reconciling the world in its current state with the notion that transitioning to a post scarcity economy would mean some rich assholes dont somehow rig things in their favor to prevent us from having a utopia is impossible.

I honestly don't understand the love for TNG. I mean, it's fine. I watched the original broadcast, and it could be hard to watch then. It's even harder to watch now. At least DS9 had a plot arc (yet another thing copied from B5). I'm not saying I'd kick TNG out of bed, I'm just saying it's really not the sacrosanct thing it's held out to be.

Trek.

The worst parts of Trek are way worse than the worst parts of Star Wars, but the sheer volume of content means there's more of it that I love just by default, haha.

One of the things I've always loved about Trek is its relentless optimism, which is something that is sorely lacking in sci-fi and media in general.

Yeah, maybe it's rather naive bordering on pollyanna-ish, but there's something to be said for the notion that humanity constantly strives to be better.

Overall, Star Wars had more interesting stuff. Lots of cool TV series like Clone Wars stuff, and of course having like a hundred games, at least half of which are good.

Star Trek has generally been much more conservative when it comes to dipping into games. Like, the three that are currently a thing right now are an ancient MMO, a gatcha game, and a mobile game that is also probably somewhat gatcha.

Tbf, in the lore of Star Trek humanity went through World War III and basically a total societal collapse before we got our shit together and built a utopian society.

That helps a little, but the problem persists. Just seems like whatever leaders were spearheading the rebuilding of civilization would basically be kings again.

Yeah, Trek style Utopia took three necessary factors
  • World War III
  • A human launching a warp drive starship
  • An alien civilization benevolent enough to assist with the reconstruction of Earth
Take any of those away and it's likely that it doesn't happen.

If there was a French Revolution style kill all the rich movement after the collapse, and then the burgeoning society was basically designed from the ground up to beat greed out of people with extreme prejudice, thats about the only way I can think of it may be remotely plausible.

My head canon is that the Vulcans made it pretty clear they were in charge early on and due to superior strength and weapons beat the rich warlords into submission very quickly.

Granted I don't see Trek style communism as achievable for a variety of reasons like Santa Claus machines being seemingly impossible with our current understanding of physics but that's another story.

Yeah, but if Santa Claus machines are ever invented, I feel like the rich will just hoard them and use them to make themselves infinitely rich, as they wont even need consumers to buy their shit anymore. Yeah, it would basically make money worthless in the long run, but were talking about the people who lead corporations to make poor long term decisions all the time in the pursuit of short term stock bumps and shit.

Are you talking about early TNG? Yes, I mean that's aged terribly. I think most of the series (especially later seasons) aged pretty well, even better than later series in some ways.
