What is a "gamer" in this context? Why do people say this?

It's hard to answer that question without providing any further information on what "this context" is.

Well usually it's because someone slags off on a voice actor or face model for "ruining" a character but that isn't "gamer" behavior, it's just what happens when people have no filter.

Generally I find when they say 'gamers' like that they generally mean 'incels'. The kind of people that will call a game 'woke' because the female character models don't look like porn stars.

In that case, it's "gamer" in the sense of somebody who has made the games in question such an integral part of their personality that they feel personally insulted by a performer failing to fit their narrow ideas of how the character should look/sound and lash out accordingly. It's the sort of "I'm a gamer, therefore games must be made for me!" sort of attitude that characterizes enough self-described "gamers" that it's coloured the general perception of the label.

Generally, I find that lately "Once again GAMERS prove how awful they are" and similar sentiments are all too often deliberately rhetoric used by people who don't want to admit how terrible they are/how terrible their product is. It's becoming a go-to tool used to deflect all legitimate criticism by pointing to the worst bad-faith critics, generalizing their behavior to all negative commentary, and then ignoring anything and everything that hurts your feelings. Because you'll ALWAYS be able to find the bad-faith critics to justify yourself if you look hard enough (in ANY fandom, in ANY online community).

It's like the new Godwin's Law of Entertainment. "It is not ME who is wrong! It's the gamers/fans/etc who are toxic and bad!"

It's reaching the point where I'm starting to just immediately react to any instance of "WAAAH, FANS BAD!" as being a sign that the person complaining is a) deliberately lying, b) an asshole.

Agree.

Echo chambers and narcissism have essentially ruined all discourse, good and bad, on both sides of any given argument.

The social media era (and the Internet in general) has basically turned an entire generation (or two, or three) of people into shit-flinging monkeys who seem incapable of ever leaving the concrete stage of emotional development (ie, the part you're supposed to "graduate from" somewhere around 12, where you learn to empathize with other people and understand that valid world-views can exist outside of your own).

Giving everyone the power to shout into the void has convinced everyone that everything they want to say matters and is important. Finding other people who agree has convinced everyone that their viewpoint is always objectively correct. Which has made most attempts at actual rational discussion difficult at best.

Nearly every argument and discussion has stopped being about who is "right", and has become about who can score enough rhetorical points to "win".

they're also the ones that tend to throw an absolute tantrum when a games port or remaster or remake changes something, usually desexualizing some child character or even just giving a character longer pants.

hell, the absolute tantrum people threw over square changing tifas design, about how some made up mistranslated ethics department made them tone down her sexiness

and then square revealed the character and they just gave her fuckin thigh highs lmfao

On the one hand, I feel like The Joker: "It'd be funny if it weren't so pathetic." And I feel that's how these POS'es should be treated; laughed at and ridiculed. But unfortunately, there's enough nutjobs out there where pretty much all these threats made have to be given at least cursory investigations, because what if you decide to ignore them and one neckbeard makes good on his words?

Public safety is maintained, with no need to compromise on the vicious ridicule.

I remember very specifically weirdos pointed this out in the Chrono Cross remaster and you could no longer see a child character's panties in a certain animation. They were trying to argue "I'm just against censorship in any form", but it was super weird. Tifa's redesign was funny because she still had pretty big tits, honestly, but they were realistic big lol

Absolutely this. Lots of people play games. Its a really popular hobby.

However, while it becoming part of your identity doesnt necessarily make you part of the incel crowd, theres a huge amount of overlap.
