Jury begins deliberations in manslaughter trial of Michigan school shooters mother Jennifer Crumbley

A jury began deliberating Monday in the manslaughter trial of Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of the teenager who killed four people at a Michigan high school in 2021, in a novel legal case that stands as a test of the limits of whos responsible for a mass shooting.

Crumbley, 45, has pleaded not guilty to four counts of involuntary manslaughter for her role in the November 30, 2021, mass shooting at Oxford High School, which left four students dead and seven others wounded.
The jury of 12, made up of six men and six women, must be unanimous to reach a verdict. Five alternates will remain sequestered in a separate room from the main panel for the duration of deliberations.

The prosecution has argued she is responsible for the deaths because she was grossly negligent in giving a gun to her son Ethan, who was 15 at the time, and failing to get him proper mental health treatment despite warning signs. Over a week of testimony, law enforcement officials, school employees, shooting victims and those who knew Jennifer Crumbley testified for the prosecution.

Its a rare case that takes some really egregious facts, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in closing arguments Friday. It takes the unthinkable, and she has done the unthinkable, and because of that, four kids have died.

However, the defense has argued the blame lay elsewhere: on her husband for improperly securing the firearm; on the school for failing to notify her about her sons behavioral issues; and on Ethan himself, who planned and carried out the attack on his own. Defense attorney Shannon Smith said the case was dangerous for parents everywhere.

Can every parent really be responsible for everything their children do, especially when its not foreseeable? Smith said in closing arguments.

Jennifer Crumbley took the stand in her own defense and, in a remarkable moment, expressed no regret for her actions.

Ive asked myself if I would have done anything differently, and I wouldnt have, she testified.

Closing arguments took place Friday. The judge is expected to instruct the jury on the law Monday morning and deliberations will follow.

To honest, my first thought was that involuntary manslaughter was probably going a bit far.

Then I remembered that she gave a gun to a mentally ill 15 year old.

So in this case, she does carry a large amount of responsibility for what happened.

Hearing her excuses in court shows how fucking dumb she is.
If her lawyer was smart, they wouldn't have let her talk.

I do feel a little bad for the Crumbly kid, his dumb as shit parents just weren't capable of raising a child.

That's a matter of dispute between defence and prosecution.

So let me amend what I wrote and say that giving a gun to a 15 year old who had displayed the behaviours that Ethan Crumbley had, was not a reasonable thing to do.

You don't need a court to tell you that a kid who shoots up a school very obviously has mental issues.

Yes.

What they are arguing about is whether or not he has a diagnosis that can be used in mitigation. It's more of a legal issue than anything else.

Didn't the school tell his parents he was seeing demons, and they straight up refused to leave to take care of him?

So, the school has several choices:

1) Have the parents take custody (they refused)

2) Send the kid home, where he might be suicidal.

3) Send him back to class, not knowing he has a weapon, endangering other students.

4) Have a school staff member watch him, not knowing he has a weapon, endangering the staff member.

It's not uncommon for mass shooters to kill family members before moving on to their target. Just telling him to go home wouldn't really solve anything.

Mental health services should have been alerted. A kid displaying violent thoughts and talking about demons needs to be taken into custody for their own well-being.

Yes, the school does play a part in this.

I blamed parents that have become very lawsuit abusive that has caused schools to become averse to doing anything with problem students.

I part company with defense counsel completely on this set of facts.

1.I do think it is a potentially slippery slope to hold parents responsible for what their kids do. No parent, no matter how close the bond with their kids, knows what their kids are doing all the time. BUT.

2.This result was very, very foreseeable. Giving a child with his clear difficulties access to a firearm was always going to end in disaster. This is absolutely a criminal level of negligence, defense counsel making the only argument they can notwithstanding.

Both parents should be punished to the full extent of the law.

I saw a video about some youtuber that planned a mass shooting that killed his family first since he didn't want them to deal with the grief of knowing what he did or something like that. Afterwards he backed out of the mass shooting.
