When it started with the Sokka thing I was figuring people were overreacting to it since it was a pretty minor plotline that wasn't key to the story. My first thought was "The water tribe's leaders are more openly sexist as a plot point." so it'd be fine to cut that minor component of Sokka's character in favor of maybe even expanding the stuff on that front with Katara.

...Then they say they're cutting that, so now Katara loses a lot from proving a patriarchal society wrong. Less conflict or intrigue, just smoothed any sense of edges out and make her character less badass.

Then they start saying Aang's gonna have a vision and all of the small stops that help build chaacter are just going to be excised from the show, then they say they're gonna show the Airbender genocide when the image of his master's skeleton was about as effective of an image as you could make, etc etc.

No wonder the writers left. This is going to be utterly horrendous lol, they have contempt for the source material.

Are they fucking mental? Game of Thrones was popular for two reasons and two reasons only
Sex and violence, the story was only a backdrop to cram in as much of that as possible, Avatar was all about story it's why the original show was so appealing in the first place to people and to a lesser extent W.I.T.C.H tried to have it but it shit itself in the second season and never recovered

I thought I explained it well, but the reason I wasn't upset over Sokka having that removed was that it wasn't really that key to his development. It was a short-staying thing where he was proven wrong in short order and it kind of stays gone. The most it does is imply the Water Tribes might be patriarchal in general.

Based on what your saying we shouldn't have obstacles in fiction at all. The argument here isn't that I like the sexism of the Northern Water Tribe, it's that it was written as an obstacle to overcome, as a flaw of that Water Tribe, and we follow Katara triumphantly overcoming the men who view her as inferior. It's a good element of the story in a bunch of ways, why remove that? Why make it less interesting? Is overcoming gender bias a dated concept?

Personally, it just feels like an unnecessary change. As was said, it was brief thing so it doesn't mean that much for it to be gone....but their reasoning was just dumb imo.

Hopefully they don't mean tone wise. Making Avatar the Last Airbender an M rated show would be a huge mistake.

That said I will never dismiss a show before I watch it. Last time I did that the show in question ended up being my favorite show of 2023.

Conflict is always good and always there. Assuming they are removing all conflict is just silly.

Yes sussy boy, because we watched the show and saw the character grow and change, saw a kids show tackle subjects like sexism and thought thats pretty cool.

Ah, so they're going for the violence and shock factor. Is that why they're showing the genocide of the air nomads? For that Game of Thrones style violence?

Doesn't seem like a good choice for this story, but I'll still reserve judgement until I see it for myself

I may be acting a bit nave here, but I take it to mean that both shows were highly renowned for their worldbuilding and politics. "There is no war in Ba Sing Se" could've been put straight into GoT if you had Jo Dee showing her tits once or twice.

It was actually. He changed his views completely after getting owned by the kinship warriors. It was key to his personal growth as a character as after that ass whooping he started seeing women as equals. So removing that is a crime imo.
Edit: hate auto correct. I was typing kioshi warriors
