The one I can think of that was actually effective since I was a kid was in Pokmon Mystery Dungeon Sky where Darkrai makes you think your partner is joining him

Doom Patrol

Larry's a self-hating gay man who was horribly disfigured in an accident that rendered him lethally radioactive. He's forced to cover himself in special bandages whenever he leaves his lead-lined bunker of a bedroom. There's a sequence where he starts singing karaoke in a gay bar. It not only uplifting to the people of Danny the Street, the sentient road they're living on, but it also brightens his mood considerably. And with a little Danny magic, he even returns to his natural look and is able to dance with another singer without hurting anyone.

And then it's interrupted mid-lyric to show that he was just imagining it. He instead just coldly says he doesn't sing.

It's almost always cheap, lazy way to end something, though.

That one arc where the kid sidekick became badass but started to fear he might end up losing his morality he had a dream where he literally turned into the big bad and when he awoke realised he had been going too far

Gravity

My friend and i were about to blow a gasket because the very idea that the other guy orbited the earth and came back alive was dumb enough to happen in a movie. Thankfully the movie had more dignity, and it was one of the few times a dream worked.

Theres a moment where they subvert the trope quite cleverly in Neptunia of all of places to be clever
you see uzume be brooding and she sounds dead inside saying she needs to escape here but cant then it was a dream but it was actually uzume evil self making it like a dream it was completely real thing that happened she just loves to play mind games the evil uzume

Fresh Prince of Bel Air

Dreamed the whole Halloween episode to wake up and find out he saw the future.

The Machinist. I like it because it was more of a psychotic delusion over what he did. While it did interrupt the mystery, you can argue that it is the mystery itself at the same time. Oh and the. There were consequences as he turned himself in.
