I don't have a lot of sympathy for this guy. Actually, my sympathy is zero. Does he even realize his DUI is the issue, or is he hung up on killing somebody? Will he even change? I'd like to see him change. Certainly seems remorseful enough.

The guy was utterly uncooperative, wishing God would kill him, and likely still very drunk. The restraint chair was necessary to keep him from injuring himself.

Because when do drunk people who are hysterical and possibly suicidal ever act violent towards others or themselves? Thats just crazy.

I worked acute psych for ten years. We only physically restrained people who were confrontational, after said confrontation occurred. Suicidal ideation that was believable got you on either Line-of-Sight or 1-to-1 observation.

Line-of-sight = never out of line of sight of patient

1-to-1 = never further than arm's length away from patient.

We kept people safe without badges, without guns, without nightsticks, and without mace and tasers. We used our words with occasional physical restraint, and in ten years we never lost a patient on my shift.

So, I stand by my observation that a restraint chair for perceived suicidal ideation is blatant overkill, because it is.

I'm glad he can at least feel something unlike that psycho that was worried about getting to class the next day.

I can't really say I have sympathy for him though. At least he will be able to reflect on it in addition to some prison time.

It is definitely overkill and its unfortunate that its what they are trained to do generally. No wonder so many end up dead when cops are the ones they have to deal with. (Suicidal people not drunks)

Zero sympathy for the piece of shit who chose to drink and drive while already knowing what can and has happened.

Not really a bad idea tbh. He could hurt himself or attack the cops to try to get them to shoot him.

This reminds me of a guy I knew who was a severe alcoholic, did rehab multiple times and managed to stay sober for about 6 months...until one day he gave in to his urges, got blackout drunk, and rolled his car on the way to pick a friend up.

I remember him telling me, when he got out of the car and saw how bad it was, it was the scariest moment of his life because he genuinely couldn't remember in that moment whether or not his friend was in the car.

Anyway, he got a DUI for that obviously, and after his next DUI I just stopped talking to him.
