Thought it was a middle ground of both Gurren Lagaan and Panty and Stocking. But I didn't think it was as hype as GL or as funny as P&S

Imo Kill la Kill doesn't reach the highs of Gurren Lagann, but it doesn't get near the fucking lows of Gurren Lagann either. It's way more balanced.

That said, Kill la Kill is definitely a top 5 or top 10 anime for me

Agreed. Gurren Lagann was a 9/10 for me (the finale was more hype though) but Kill La Kill is one of the few anime that I've ever given a 10/10.

Eh, I think TTGL is seriously overhyped. People get dazzled by the spectacle and don't realize the show doesn't offer much else beyond that and maybe two or three good characters.

Also people mistakenly using Kamina as a benchmark for awesomeness never fail to trip my irony meter.

Anyways KLK is indeed peak anime. Don't forget to catch the 1-episode OVA after the series proper. It's not essential but it's a fun little extra adventure.

Trigger runs on shoestring budgets. KLK was, IIRC, their first major anime project as a studio after they left Gainax. Before that they had only done short-form anime (that looked like South Park) and OVAs of their Little Witch Academia property. They were maintaining a patreon for a while to try and raise additional funds. So if KLK looks weirdly "budget" at points it's because it is.

Also the entire series was conceptualized based on puns and wordplay:
According to director Imaishi, much of the plot is based on his observation that the Japanese manner of pronouncing "fascism" (, fassho) is nearly the same as the word "fashion" (, fasshon), his observation that the pronunciation of the Japanese words "school uniform" (, seifuku) and "conquest" (, seifuku) are identical, and that the titular kiru may mean "kill" (), "to cut" (), or "to wear" ().[9]
