I sorta agree. That is a true statement for those who could benefit from therapy. But not everyone needs or responds well to therapy.

But I definitely don't agree with the outdated opinion that going to therapy is a weakness.

You don't need a Mensa-level IQ to understand the basic point of therapy.

You can't separate your mental well-being and your physical well-being into absolutely watertight compartments. Just as your body can have sick days and need treatment sometimes, so can your mind.

I personally had a bad experience with therapy. Not the "confront your issues" kind of bad. More of the "your therapist is constantly insulting you, laughing at you, and mocking your failures" kind of way.

But besides all that, yes, I still believe therapy is good and healthy. I just have the worst luck when it comes to having people in my life.

I really want to try again, but it's causing me to hesitate on checking into it again. If I could find a good match, I think it could be great.

A good therapist helps you learn positive coping strategies. Some problems are harder to live with than others, and everyone's different, but that's the goal.

It's hard to find a good one, almost like making a friend, you gotta kinda click and understand each other.
They're great for insight. I've had too many minimize my problems or tell me i need to breath more.
My couples counselor brought up some great communication techniques, though the relationship eventually failed.
I'd rather read a recommended book, but I'm open to therapy again. You gotta want it for it to work.

Been there, done that.
Same feeling about doing nothing tbh.

Theres a cost doing nothing and for me it came in the form of my general well being -mental health and physical wellness

Meditation helped my anxiety. Doing that for over a year helped me understand myself a bit more and im more receptive to therapy now.

Id like to think being honest with myself and owning the shame i have has granted me a freedom from that alone. Like therapy helped me understand how i was in autopilot in life avoiding certain things and taking away choices by being cheap, safe, & subjectively trouble free. But that wasnt enough for me. As i got older, i found myself more curious about others and places... more curious about life in general. Realizing the control i thought i had throughout my life made me confront what little control i had

It probably saved my life too. The year I started talking with a real licensed therapist, I lost 70 pounds and recognized what anxiety symptoms felt like so I can control them better or keep them from happening to begin with.

I do think therapy is good, but I was also a bit suspicious of the "Men will do "x" instead of going to therapy" memes being plastered across the internet immediately preceeding Uber-esque "therapy" apps that sell your information (BetterHelp, etc.) launching.

yes because if there's one thing that people are clamouring for, it's a therapist who doesn't improve anything. that's like saying "plumbers are a scam, you're their income, all they'll do is break your pipes so you keep coming back". if you fuck up the service, why would they come back?

Probably gonna get flamed for this, but IMO therapy is a waste of money for the vast majority of people.

People who can afford therapy can afford to do better more sustainable coping strategies like

Going to the gym
Eating healthier foods instead of junk
Connect with close friends and family
Breathing exercises
Remove people in your life who consistently make you feel bad (If it's a boss find another job)

From what I understand therapists help people work through their trauma by getting them to talk about it right?

Life is more complicated than this! Addiction and genetic predispositions are a hell of a drug. But, I also agree that people are not spending their money on mental health nearly wisely enough. Socialized health care is the way to go!

Living in Canada and going through a waitlist through the University of Saskatchewan, I have never received a bill for my therapist, nor do I expect to.

Imagine that.
