I'd probably think the main driver for me becoming an atheist was my parents putting me in Catholic Sunday school to prepare me for communion and confirmation.

I mean if this nonsense was the case then you'd never have priests or pastors become atheists but that absolutely does happen.

I read the bible. Thought "Wow, that's full of shit" and here we are. None of it really makes any sense, and it's a pretty poor moral code except for a few ideas it has that were borrowed from other cultures. Like I mean you aren't supposed to eat shrimp. And then there's working on sunday's. that's one of the top 10 laws! Top 10! If you made a list of top ten laws, working on sunday would probably not make the cut. Or at least I'd hope not. Also there's a dirt man who marries a woman who was made from one of his ribs. That's gotta be incest, right? And then their three sons populate the world somehow. Apparently god decided to leave out all the details where their wives come from. But not to worry! He drowns the rest of the world a few chapters later anyway, and then we get more incest followed by even more incest. I swear it's the biggest incestfic I've seen in my life. You've got this guy Lot who offers his daughters to be raped by the town, and he's clearly a good righteous man for doing that. Then his wife gets turned into salt for turning around for half a second, cause apparently that makes god really angry. She looked back. Don't know why. Maybe she wanted to see what happened. Maybe she left the stove on. Maybe she forgot her favorite outfit, and wanted to go back and get it. But nope. Salt. Then his daughters drug him and rape him and get pregnant and have more incest babies. Like I said, it's a bit of an incest fic. Don't tell me it isn't! If this were any book but the bible, conservatives would be freaking out about how much incest is in this book. Or maybe turned on. Depends on if it's in an elementary school run by liberals or not.

And don't get me started on the whole sacrificing his son, who was also himself, for three whole days. Jesus was betrayed? by Judas, who turned him into the roman authorities. This was, of course, part of God's plan. God needed Judas to do this, but it was Satan who tempted him into it. Are they in cahoots? Satan's like "let's get jesus murdered." and God's like "Totally." Judas is of course hte bad guy of the story, who completes the good guys plan to get himself executed. Oh and... his followers now use his form of execution as a symbol of him and wear it around their necks. If the guillotine had been invented at the time, we'd be seeing everyone wearing guillotine necklaces right now. That's kinda fucked up when you think about it.

The important parts, of course are all the parts that teach you to hate people different from yourselves. Particularly gay people. Love your neighbors (unless they're gay, or a democrat).

Wasn't hard to notice all the hypocrisy. And if people who believe that not following the book will cause them to spend an eternity being stun by scorpions in a lake of fire in total darkness won't follow all the rules in the book... well how much can they really believe in it?

As for why I didn't find another religion, well... one would have to find me first. I'm not going to go looking for a black cat in the dark unless I hear it meow.

Ironically, this is why I'm a theist. Given what I understand about life and the universe, I wager that the existence of a higher power is more probable than not.

religion never had a large part in my life outside of the one week of vacation bible school every summer until I was like 11 or 12(I liked that because food and games). The disconnect for me came from learning things in church(when i rarely went, like VBS) but my school teachers never mentioning it. I figured if I don't learn this stuff in school, it must not matter that much.

That and I distinctly remember my friend a year older than me arguing with the one counselor about how we came from monkeys at VBS once, and that dude was quite angry. I didn't understand any of it, at all, that my friend was on to. But perhaps that swayed me as well, actually seeing some dissent(even if wrong) in person.

Boy am I glad I never got into it. To me, a waste of time. Life give me enough fullfillment without worrying about a god or being heavenly.

Cruelty made me one, honestly. I heard "god won't give you more than you can handle" a little too much one year.

Huge tree limb fell on my house, had to get teeth pulled, dog passed away, best friend got hit by a car(he lived thankfully), relatives I was staying with while basically homeless during repairs tried to fuckin rob me blind, and a lot more.

Since then, I won't say I'm still a complete atheist, I have a... Complicated relationship with faith. Guess I would be agnostic by definition right now? Easiest way to describe it anyway.
