They had plans to bring it over and even released advertising for it but it got cancelled at the last second because of budget issues.

Edit: they also brought it over on PlayStation a few years later anyway

I think it's my favorite of the first 5 games

I'm not a fan tbh.

I played it when it came out on Playstation back in the early 2000s and thought it was meh. The job system is great and all but the rest of the game was just dull.

I gave the Pixel Remaster a change within the last year and still felt like it was boring. The story is bland and there isn't much major going for it other than the job system.

Kudos to y'all who like it though

Final Fantasy is my favorite series of all time, and FF5 is one of my least favorite main numbered games in the series. But its still fun. And I totally understand why people would rank it as their favorite. I just want good characters and a good story as part of my Final Fantasy games, and those are weaknesses of FF5, unfortunately.

People aren't pretending, it's boring as shit.

I find 5 and 12 to be similar in the aspect that once your characters get access to all the jobs and you make your choices there goes all the fun and the stories aren't interesting enough to keep me going.

Its not bad but its one of my least favorite.
I picked up the pixel remasters and so its on deck soon. Currently on 3.

It's got a super generic story. Contrast with the fucking giant space flea from nowhere plot of FF4, the plot of FF5 is very mundane.

CEmen pretend 4 was great, but sleep on 5.

It's a great Final Fantasy

Not hating on it, but I don't see what makes it so good. It just seemed kinda...okay? to me.

FFV is one of favorites in the series. I first played it on PS1 and didn't get very far since the load times are a real bummer in that version. The GBA version is where I really got into it. What was fun was challenging myself to finish it with a completely different set of jobs each time.

The story and characters aren't that great. So for that reason I can see why some Final Fantasy fans don't like it much.

FFV gave us Gilgamesh so it automatically wins.

Its middle of the pack for me, and the worst of the SNES games imo.

The only criticism i ever see it get is that the story is bad.

People dont understand that you can have a game about the characters, and I think they all developed well. 5 has some nice lore too.

It's just tribalism of FF fans.
"I like 6 so 5 is bad", "i like 7 so 8 is bad*", "i like 9 so 7 is bad", etc.

FFVI is my favorite, but I like IV and V for different reasons. IV had better story and characters, but the gameplay in V is better.

Honestly the only FF I truly dislike is VIII. Only mainline game I never finished because...I just can't.

The story isn't even bad though. It's just generic and mundane. Final Fantasy hadn't really established it's as a story focused series at the time. FF2 and 4 had more involved stories, FF1 and 3 were focused more on the game mechanics. That alternating trend continued into FF5 and 6.

It wasn't really until 7 did FF finally settle into what it was.

It's my 2nd favorite final fantasy.

5 felt like a slog at times because it almost never feels like you're accomplishing anything. I think 3 handled pacing loads better with its series of "episodic" quests as you traveled.

But it has a top-tier endgame in the Merged World. You've unlocked and mastered all the mechanics at that point and the game gives you a huge area to explore with your max level party.

Its great. So is 13

In terms of gameplay its one of the more enjoyable FF games. In terms of story its pretty weak. Overall it's good to great, yeah.

V w a s good. 6 was great.

to be fair, they brough it over in 1999 and the game came out in 1992.

we only had to go 7 years without it, and honestly I think we were okay.

2 is waaaayyy worse than 5...

I recently gave up on it playing the pixel remasters. I got bored with it and lost interest.

The story and characters were ass. That's why I didn't like it. If I'm going to play a game for 30+ hours I want to care about what happens.

Final Fantasy V is one of my favorite games, the gameplay and the party interactions is one of its forte but the story is very light-headed.

do people say it's bad? the issue is that people don't say anything at all, because they didn't play it.

Butz was the katakana version of his name, and the version that was fan translated. It became Bartz when Squeenix officially brought it over.

I liked V, but in all the years since I finally played it all the way through, I haven't had much impulse to revisit it. I got into the main series for the story first and gameplay second, if that; and anytime I found myself looking for rich job class-centric gameplay, the Tactics series scratched that itch far better.

5 was fun in the party building aspect thanks to jobs and plenty of decent gear options. It was definitely weaker in other places, though a lot of its characters were designed more for fun than drama. It was a definite reversal of mood from 4.

For the series as a whole... I started on 6, but liked all of 4-12 (though 8 was just okay and 11 aged poorly). I sometimes feel I'm in the minority with debates on the matter because it does often feel like people will hold up one to trash another.

This I can largely agree with, but the Tactics games are way bigger time investments fwiw. I don't always feel I'll have the attention to spare to do something meaningful in them.

5 is a way better job system than 3 though.

This. The job system is fucking lame and overrated as hell. Plus, other than that, the characters, plot, world, etc. are all weak as hell in FF5.

It's a toss up between v and ix as my favorites.the grind in v is super relaxing though (and unnecessary, but fun), it has probably the best blue magic in the series as well (other than maybe 10-2).

FFV is a top 3 FF game alongside VI and VII for me.

And also, hot take but I think FFV's story is better than its given credit for and not really worse compared to FFIV's or any FF before it (and even some after it). FFV had a death scene that hit harder than any death or """death""" scene from FFIV, Bartz' backstory, the stuff between Lenna and Faris, Faris herself being cool as shit, some of the lore stuff with the dawn warriors, different worlds, Enuo (who would become more of a thing in FFV advance or the mobile version), it obviously also had more humor and quirkiness to it which was also greatly appreciated. I'm not going to say FFV's story was super amazing or one of the better FF stories but it was alot more than just "funny dumb FF story" nor do I think its one of the weaker ones either .

I can definitely agree that I liked V's story more than IV. But I never really cared for IV's story, like, at all. V at least had its moments.

If you want to play a FF with a great job system and don't want to need to mute your TV while playing X-2, FFV is there for you. It was amazing in its day but later games have done the job system better so it loses its luster.
