And like 40%+ of the bag is the wrapping/tiny cartons the candy comes in, the Sweetarts come in little wrappers with only 3 pieces and other candy it's mixed with isn't much better.

Halloween is going to be dead for so many kids in the future, I've already noticed a sharp decrease in kids actually trick or treating the past 5 years or so, despite living in a metropolitan area with plenty of Elementary/Middle schools around.

i was buying some candy just in case we get any trick or treaters. i was looking at the prices and wondering how i could EVER afford to buy as much candy as my parents did for halloween. it'd be like $200 now to do what my parents did. that's insane.

i also think most people do "trunk or treating" events now because i live in a neighborhood with kids and have never gotten trick or treaters.

I kinda prefer little candies since I have a binging personality and it helps me eat less by picking out only singles

i agree with you. it's easier for me to limit my intake to a few little packages than try to control myself with a whole bag lmao plus if you get a variety package you can have several types of candy and hit different cravings

Trick-or-treating was kind of a great way to give kids a little taste of independence. You usually start off trick-or-treating with your parents, then eventually go trick or treating without the adults and with friends. That's how it used to be, at least.

Might buy some candy tomorrow if it's discounted.

We've got a good 8 or so groups of kids and it's snowing here. We've definitely been on the rise after having practically no kids for a few years about a decade ago.

Got less than ten groups and I live right next to a school. Gave out full bars.

Idk if kids are less enthusiastic about trick or treating or what? They definitely seem into Halloween but they don't trick or treat. Most of the groups don't even say "trick or treat", they just take the candy and leave.

I slept during trick or treat hours this year, didn't get waken up once. I might stop over to target during my lunch break and see if they have any Reese's variety packs left.

I feel like it's a byproduct of our disassociating from community centered living to more rugged individualism.

I don't really know exactly what gave rise to trunk or treating but it sounds pretty lame to me. Sounds like it's either a product of suburban safety paranoia or our on-the-go culture where everything needs to be done as efficiently as possible now. I'm sure most kids don't mind cause it's candy, especially if they start growing up where it's all they know, but to me a big part of the fun was walking around the neighborhood

It's a bit of both of the factors you identified, but also a significant part of it is that you can't really walk around many modern neighbourhoods. Most suburbs are too sprawling and often don't even have sidewalks because they've been so overwhelmingly designed around the expectation that people will just drive everywhere they want to go, and most neighbourhoods that aren't suburbs are mostly made up of apartment/condo buildings and the only one you can even access is your own. Even in more medium-density areas that are designed to be walkable, it's common for street-level properties to be commercial (with residential behind/above), so accessing homes from the street can be tricky.

Given the choice between having kids wander around streets that are fundamentally designed to be unsafe for pedestrians, wander the halls of an apartment building where it may or may not be the norm for kids to trick-or-treat, or get together with a bunch of your friends and your kids' friends and just exchange candy directly at a small costume party, I can actually understand why trunk-or-treating wins out there. The other options just aren't overly appealing. Traditional trick-or-treating really only works in neighbourhoods that mostly consist of single-family homes or townhouses/duplexes, but that are also relatively dense and therefore easy to get around on foot, and nobody really builds neighbourhoods like that anymore.

Yeah only had 350 kids this year. The snow kept them away, usually get 500.

People find it shocking that a town of 2000 people has 500 kids trick or treating lol. But the entire town and neighboring towns come to my street. So it's pretty busy. Same with Xmas.

Where the hell do you live that you're getting hundreds of kids and consider that low? I feel like the only places that dense would mostly be apartments, and do kids really go trick or treating at apartments?

Edit: Didn't see the edit
Yeah do the math, i had 1500 candies to give each kid 3. Crazy I know. I have lots extra, so time to fatten coworkers

And you have to realize living in a hick town, the kids come in riding trailers pulled by quads and on the backs of trucks. It's crazy. I love it. I'm glad the culture is fear hasn't really hit here.

The street I grew up on would pretty routinely see 100-200+ each year. That was a relatively dense neighbourhood, though (again, that sweet spot of having a lot of single-family and townhouses packed relatively densely for lots of street-level access, with full sidewalks and low car traffic), plus it was a relatively well-off area very close (<20-minute walk) to a couple of public housing districts and other low-income neighbourhoods, including a lot of smaller apartment buildings that were denser. That meant there were plenty of kids in the neighbourhood, plus plenty more would come in from nearby neighbourhoods.
