Yes I metal detect decently often. I have a Fisher, it cost around $250, it's pretty great for my purposes but it really depends on where you plan on detecting. Also you need to invest in a good shovel and pinpointer too.

what kinds of places do you usually partake in this activity?

Pretty much a few local parks, they have coins buried everywhere. You can do it in the main fields if it's not too busy or crowded or go in the woods if you can.
