Yeah. He's going to be shit. But that was always going to be the case with a Republican House, which is what we have. We just want to move forward at this point. Open the House back up and get the government somewhat functioning again.

in theory, johnson is not as locked into his position as publicly as jordan was. he hasn't made the enemies jordan made. in theory, johnson has more room to steer things towards compromise than jordan would have.

It's not even worth considering whether he'll be open to compromise or not.

Knew they'd cave. The people refusing to even budge weren't even moderates, they were just as extreme but petty.

I'll admit, I didn't think they'd be able to elect anybody.

Johnson seems awful. The possible damage he can do is limited since Democrats still control the Senate and presidency. The big question though is whether he and the Republicans are going to force a shutdown next month or not.

Yeah, there's a good chance it happens. Shutting down the government has never worked out well for Republicans but I guess they figure this time it'll be different?

If Jordan became speaker we would have had a shutdown without a doubt. Shutdowns are the only thing he did in the house.

With Johnson, like with McCarthy it depends on if Trump is more influential then the corporate donors (to both parties) who don't want our country shutting down.

Only way is if no party reaches 270 electoral votes, then it goes to the House and the party with most delegations.

No, the Speaker is not involved in that process at all. The VP presides over it, and they cannot do it either.

It would take 87 House members and 20 Senators objecting to even have a full vote to not count a states electoral votes.

Also, the next congress (119th) would get sworn in on January 3rd and the electoral college vote certification happens on January 6th.

The regularity of Republican shutdowns and debt ceiling fights has already resulted in a lowering of the US credit rating. I can imagine the Wall Street types are gonna feel some kind of way about the possibility of something like that happening again.

I don't know how stupid some of these people are, so I'm speaking from a rational and practical position. But I would imagine that the Republicans who were largely outraged at Gaetz and his friends would go along with reinstating the Democrats rule. And I would imagine that the Democrats would as well. The only ones who should really object are the Chaos Core. And they are outnumbered. If the Republicans want him to be removed, then the Democrats rule would still allow that. It just doesn't let any random person, and most certainly a minority number of people motion to remove the Speaker.

If the rule doesn't get reinstated then I guess it shows how 1) Incompetent the Republicans and 2) How much the Republicans want the government to shut down.

Naturally, we already know both of those to be true, but more evidence never hurts.
