toothpaste taste ruining food and drink

If you have a strong aftertaste, you're not rinsing enough. Also you're supposed to brush your tongue, which helps with this.

You aren't supposed to rinse, just spit. If you do rinse, you need to wait several minutes to let the fluoride absorb into the enamel.

The only toothpaste you can eat breakfast immediately after brushing is the natural kind without SLS (though I'm not sure why you would brush and then eat just like you shouldn't shower and shit after if it can be avoided).

Well, right, I assumed this was known. You're not supposed to eat or anything right after, anyway, so I just assumed people naturally did this. I brush, wait about 15 minutes, then rinse.

What's the point of brushing your teeth and then immediately eating? The idea is to clean your teeth and let them stay clean until you eat again (and brush again, they say after every meal)

I feel like if you're eating right after brushing you're kind of defeating the purpose of brushing.

Im sorry, but how the fuck can you eat after brushing? Is there some magical toothpaste out there that has no flavor?

Otherwise, doesnt your food taste weird from the mintiness or whatever flavor you use?

Or do you wake up, brush your teeth, wait a couple hours, and then have breakfast?

I typically wake up hungry, so I eat breakfast pretty early.

I mean here are the facts

1.) You get plaque accumulation while sleeping along with other bacteria in your mouth
2.) Eating without brushing can get you sick due to ingesting that bacteria
3.) Brushing after eating can damage your enamel and actually weaken / hurt your teeth
4.) Rinsing after brushing removes a lot of the benefit of the actual brushing of your teeth
5.) It is better to chew sugar free gum or use mouth wash after eating instead of brushing unless you take a 30 minute break to let your teeth strengthen

So take what you will from that.

You get plaque accumulation all the time. This increases when there's either a food source, or your mouth gets dry.
No, you won't get sick if you eat without brushing your teeth first.
That only applies if you were like eating/drinking something pretty acidic. If you weren't, brushing immediately is good for your teeth as it limits damage caused by the bacteria digesting the food particles(which produces acids).

When you're sleeping do you expect to be swallowing spit all the time or something? Sleeping lowers your saliva production which increases the plaque build up far more than just existing.

Your mouth gets drier while you sleep, but, assuming you are brushing your teeth before going to bed, going around all day with food particles all over your mouth is going to be worse than whatever happened over night.

I brush after, and I've read the science.

Neither path is perfect. After is supposedly bad for enamel. But left over food is also bad for enamel, since bacteria eat it and shit acid out, and contribute to gingivitis, breath, etc.

Starving the bacteria seems common sense to me.

Regardless of what is actually true, my mouth feels best if I brush after.

Like I said, You're supposed to brush first thing in the morning and then 20-30 minutes after you eat.

Not directly after you eat, like people on here are suggesting.

Yes. You can. Whoever told you otherwise is wrong.

From https://www.ocyoursmile.com

  • Increase your saliva production. Brushing first thing in the morning triggers saliva production so your mouth begins cleaning itself before, during, and after your meals. Saliva also helps break down food and kills harmful bacteria.

This is the only part of your post that has some truth to it. Problem is, many breakfast foods and beverages are highly acidic, such as citrus fruits and juices, or filled with sugars, such as cereals, breads, pastries, coffee creamers.

No. I brush when I wake up before I shower, eat breakfast, and then brush again when I get to work.

I then brush about an hour after I eat lunch.

And then finally when I get home from the gym after I shower (around 9:30-10pm)

You are constantly swallowing some portion of your mouth bacteria.
Nothing in your quote there says it is dangerous. Harmful, in that context, means bacteria that is bad for your mouth's health.

In my world, harmful = dangerous.

And your teeth rotting away or having issues with your gums may not be a stomach ache, but I still consider that "being sick".

I guess your definition is different.

Theres a correct answer to this. Its best for your tooth health to brush after eating, not before. Otherwise the remnants of your meal sit on your teeth all day. Just try to wait like 20 minutes between eating and brushing so that you dont brush away enamel whiles its softer right after eating.

If you read though the thread, you're half right.

The correct answer is to brush first thing in the morning, and then 20-30 minutes after each meal.

First thing in the morning will break down plaque buildup from overnight, as you produce less saliva when you sleep vs when you are awake. It also promotes saliva production which helps fight plaque buildup.

And then 20-30 minutes after each meal for the reason you listed.

Because both of my parents had tooth/gum issues I'm VERY OCD about the health of my teeth and gums and have done probably more research on this than the average person should.

^This. If the bacteria that accumulates after you sleep was actually dangerous if swallowed people would have died off by now. Have there been any documented cases of bacteria from morning breath killing or making someone ill?

I guess it's true that you just need to brush them within 24 hrs of the last food you ate in order to prevent plague buildup, however to brush your teeth and then shortly eat something afterwards sounds like the food is just going to taste like shit.

I speak from experience cause I've done this with both brushing my teeth and using mouthwash, and it makes food/drinks taste terrible afterwards for a little bit.
