Welcome! It's finally happening. After 5 years of build up and playing through every mainline game in the Resident Evil franchise (and some side ones), I've finally arrived at the game that made me get into the series to begin with.

Playing the Gold Edition with PSVR. Know nothing about the story or gameplay beyond it's in first person now. Won't be posting as many updates as I usually do in my playthrrough topics since I don't want to take off the headset and just get fully immersed in the horror.

I recall a while back someone mentioned I should play the demo before the main game. So if anyone has any opinions on that let me know before I start.

Why would you play the demo first, that's just the beginning part of the game.

Yeah, the demo isn't really worth playing. It has a couple of unique things, but it's really just the start of the game. I think you also get an extra one of the currency/collectibles for the real game?

No clue. Just remember someone random saying it at some point. I assumed it was something not in the actual game. Glad I asked.

Alright gonna start tonight. Right now my biggest hurdle is that my cat fucking hates me wearing my VR headset.

The whole opening's been pretty incredible so far. First of all the game looks like a million bucks and runs real smooth in VR. I've never played a full ass VR game before where there's tons of money and stuff put into having an entire experience. It's mostly been stuff like Beat Saber and Tetris Effect with short "VR experiences" like the Batman Arkham VR game. I enjoyed Moss and Astro Bot, but those weren't immersive, first person games like this. The only horror one I ever played was Home Sweet Home which was alright, but janky and nothing on this level.

Real curious how far away from the RE franchise this will get. I know Chris comes in at some point. Not sure if that's a DLC thing or a stinger or something. Don't tell me either way. Don't want to know. But this is already a real far cry from anything else in the franchise, especially 6 (thank god).

Right now my theory is the Baker family was experimented by some Umbrella or "Neo-Umbrella" (ugh) cast offs or they stumbled upon some secret hidden lab near their land or something.

Found Mia and she stabbed me through the hand. So she's infected with something and maybe someone is trying to take over her body? She's been missing for 3 years and I (Ethan) got tricked into showing up here. Found a note that listed a bunch of names on it. One being the cameraman from the found footage which left his fate unknown. Mia's was blank, so it's wait and see, but someone's clearly running some shotty science experiments in this dump.

Wonder if I'm going to find out there's a tunnel that leads to some super clean super lab with fucking laser beams everywhere. Kinda hope the entire game is just backwoods gross hillbilly houses. Loving the vibe.

Again, don't tell me anything. If I'm posting predictions or speculation, it's just to put it out there. I'm not looking for answers.

I played it for the first time earlier this month, not in VR though. Didn't mind first person at all and it definitely helped with taking in the atmosphere. They certainly took advantage of it too in terms of making you feel claustrophobic at times. Also love the vibe of the shit ass swamp.

I am pretty curious how it plays outside of VR. They've done a REAL good job incorporating it, especially with the settings I switched too. Smooth fast turning, no FOV filter thing. Smart to just leave your arms visible since seeing your legs in FPS games is always silly if you run in circles or something.

Very little "detached Rayman hands", but there is a cut to black in some areas like crawling under a gate. Wondering if those exist outside of VR. Pretty minor.

JESUS one of the Mia jumpscares got me good. Literally jumped back in my chair. Woof.

Was pretty shocked that I killed Mia, but of course that wasn't the case. Shocked I lost my hand too, but I guess we're dealing with a re-growing limbs and coming back from the dead virus. Died in the chainsaw fight to Mia, but won the second time just unloading on her. Aiming feels pretty smooth, but getting around enemies might take some getting used to.

And now we are going full on Texas Chainsaw Massacre. One of my favorites. Jack's a real son of a bitch.

Oh my god...a book by Clive O'Brian. First RE thing in the game and it's from frigging Revelations. Please don't mention dumbass Terragrigia. God I hate Terragrigia. Clive's alright though. Decent head guy for the BSAA. Wonder how they're doing.

God damn that hide and seek with Jack was intense. Him bursting through the walls. So far all the jumpscares have gotten me. Shit's effective in VR.

Oh my god an item box! Can't believe they brought 'em back. Nuts.

Like the codex watch showing my health or something. Also damn I didn't regrow anything. My hand got stitched back on by the looks of it.

Knew the cop wasn't long for this world. Least he gave me a knife and I got his gun.

That garage fight was insane. Driving the car into Jack and him just being fucking nuts. This guy's no Wesker. Loves flaunting his immortality just to fuck with me.

What a mansion. This is some straight up Resident Evil 1 shit man. Shotgun trap room, dog head crests to open doors. I love it. There's also something incredible to me about just having grandma sitting upstairs out of it. Should probably kill her honestly. She's gonna jump out that chair at some point and fuck my shit up.

Oh wow another tape that I play through. I guess this is going to be a thing. That's really cool. Super enjoy this set up. IDK about the stealth. Does feel a wee bit trial and error with Margarita catching me cause I hid on the left instead of the right, but not too bad so far. Reminds me a lot of Outlast, but nowhere close to as bad as Outlast 2. That game was so fucking bad with trial and error shit that absolutely ruined any horror or suspense.

Shadow puzzles. How the hell do these work? I get how to solve them, but how do these register to open the doors? That's some crazy technology man.

Another run in with Jack and I don't know if I can actually fight him or not so I just ran. Is he fucking Mr. X just stalking me? That's AWESOME.

I was going to say I am SHOCKED how there are just no enemies to fight, but a big god damn sludge monster just burst out at me. The key to winning any combat in this game appears to be putting a table or something between you and the enemy. Dude took a ton of my ammo. Like how they give you the tools to either make ammo or healing items. Good stuff.

Another sludge zombie and I actually went in on him with my knife to conserve ammo because I can't afford to drop 15-20 rounds into these things.

We've actually got save room ass save rooms again to match the item boxes. Music too!

Alright think I learned my limits with VR. My eyes are starting to kill me so that's a wrap for tonight.

So my first impressions are that I LOVE this shit so far. It's so fucking cool. The atmosphere, the puzzles, the pacing, the documents. THIS is such a big change for Resident Evil, but somehow it's the most Resident Evil since...3?! CVX?

Yes it's first person and that's a massive change, but this is a HORROR game. I'm not aiming down the sights and blasting zombies away. I'm working with limited resources, going against tough enemies that feel way above me, working with limited inventory while solving puzzles and unlocking doors to a mansion. This is so much more RE than 6, 5, even 4. It truly feels like a different take on RE1 (and REmake is my favorite RE ever so that's just perfect).

We'll see how it goes as the game opens up, but so far absolutely everything has been aces.

Usually crafting systems are so tacked on, but it works so well in RE.

Alright this combat is getting a little ridiculous. Am I supposed to be fighting them? Am I supposed to be this reliant on melee or is that just me coming off of playing the Condemned?

Don't have nearly enough ammo to take down 7 of these fucking goo monsters and they take forever to kill the way I'm doing it, trying to be safe. Maybe I'm supposed to try and run away or stealth it? Like it's Silent Hill and fighting is bad, but there's no way I can juke past 4 of them in a row to get to the room where I gotta go.

Brightside I unlocked the shotgun. Downside everything else.

Still a ton of fun playing, but fucking hard and I've been stuck in this morgue basement area for like an hour now.

Do I suck or is this game fucking hard?

Cleared out the basement finally. Now I'm fighting Jack and nailing him with fucking 12+ shotgun headshots and he just keeps coming. He goes down and I knife his exposed weak point, but then I run out of ammo cause ammo is fucking scarce yo.

All for a challenge and enemies should be something to fear, but c'mon.

Get the chainsaw and do some damage, but dude's a fucking sponge. God damn this is frustrating.

Finally beat Jack after like 12 tries. Just fucking went in and chainsawed the shit out of his legs good. What an absolute pain in the fucking ass. Wonder if he's gone for good. He did fucking blow up so he'd have to regenerate his entire torso and arms and head and yeah he'll probably be back.

Made it out the house and into the trailer. Finally used the coins I've been collecting on some steroids to buff my max health. Touched Zoe's bra and talked to her on the phone. So I gotta find a serum for me, Mia and Zoe to get the hell out of her and it sounds like Momma is up next.

It for the night. Not feeling too great about tonight. Made very little progress it feels. Died so many times. Beginnings of any and every survival horror or action horror games are always the hardest since you're so under equipped. Still, this was a very frustrating night. Hopefully it gets better. I don't want to turn into fucking Rambo, but these enemies are just bullet sponges and just keep coming. No real way to stealth them either. Can probably get past them but then I don't know if I'm missing a key or something in the rooms.

Hopefully I'll get a long session in tomorrow and make real progress again.

You've played a fair number of RE games at this point, so I feel like it's not a spoiler to say that your ammo troubles will ease as you go along.

The first part of the game is a huge pain in the ass with ammo scarcity.

Fantastic night so far.

Made it to the smaller house with what's her name? Marguerite? Fucking hated dealing with the bugs, but getting the little flame thrower was fun. Flying insects have always been my most hated enemy type in RE games and the big ones here are mildly annoying, but a hell of a lot easier to deal with than the classics with tank controls and aiming.

Was great sneaking around the house past the momma. Getting the crank, doing vintage Resident Evil shit. Know what this is? This is the shack near the Spencer Mansion where you fight the plant and make the V-Jolt. All the spiders there. The Dormitory.

I'm not really grossed out by bugs, but crawling through the walls in VR with the centipedes was... well I did get a bit of the willies.

Made it to the pit and fought Marguerite. Pretty simple, but obviously wasn't the end of it. Got the crow key and went all the way back to the main house to unlock one door, but baby was it worth it. Grenade launcher and flame rounds. Which came in very handy for the big Marguerite spider lady fight.

Died a few times, but had a blast fighting her really. Her creeping around the ceilings, trying to ambush you. Me hiding around corners taking headshots. Eventually I fell and got cornered by her and a bunch of bugs and just unloaded on her. I do mean unloaded. She took every shotgun shell and grenade round I had. Finally hit her with one single pistol round and it's bye bye momma.

Went back through the little girl's room to get the arm and that section was amazing. A straight up haunted house ride. Fucking aces. Even had the classics like the ball rolling out of nowhere. So dark too. When the goo monsters showed up on my way out I managed to dodge every single one of them and didn't waste a bullet. They don't seem to be able to handle doors very well and I never see myself going back there so they can all rot.

Stopped for now in the trailer getting the phone call from the son. He's got the head, Mia and Zoe, so he's gotta get got. After that? All that's left as far as I know is fucking grandma and of course whatever this little ghost girl is.

So the story so far is this from what I am piecing together with notes. (Have I mentioned how good it is to have fucking notes in an RE game? Fuck you RE6). Jack Baker looked like a nerd in an old picture of him and the Mrs. So I'm thinking this hillbilly used to be a scientist and maybe was working with umbrella or something. Maybe he tried to rescue this little girl that was being experimented on? Giving me some Natalia from Revelations 2 vibes.

Anyway the little girl seems to be the source of all this. She had a drawing with a bunch of scribble figures as her "family" so I think she's trying to mind control people and bring them into "her family". From another note I found it seems like eating whatever the Bakers tried to feed me at dinner is part of that process. I have no clue if the goo people are considered members or just "turned". I remember a note I found back in the original house listing names.

So the Bakers got corrupted, but also freaky progenitor virus powers where they can take insane amounts of damage and transform into shit like spiders or whatever. Typical RE stuff. Mia...I have no idea what she was doing or how she got mixed up in all this. Zoe is the real daughter of Jack and Marguerite, but she was always like "this kid is sus" and wasn't playing ball. So now she's out to cure everyone, but doesn't seem to care if her family make it or not. Maybe she just figures they are lost causes. Also I don't trust her. Totally feels like she needs my help, but could be using me. Might try to cure herself and that's it. We'll see. Is weird how she knows where I am to call at all the right times. Guess it might be the watch she can track or something?

So that's what I got from the story so far.

Game's amazing. Now that I have a little more ammo and I'm not dying 30 times in a row, I can have a little more fun with it. Also I've kinda said fuck it and just started being less frugal with my ammo. Don't like running out of shotgun shells, but oh well. The progress is worth it. I do wonder if there is some built in mechanic where the game will give me ammo if I'm running low. Modern game ain't gonna just let you lock yourself out from finishing if you run out right? Anyway I've made plenty of handgun ammo so I'm good for now. Do want a new melee weapon, but at the same time don't wanna be too powerful. I hope the chainsaw is a special unlock for replays.

Oh yeah and who the fuck IS Ethan exactly? This guy is handling himself insanely well. He also knows how to make ammo and mix herbs. Very curious to see what his day job is. The only non-STARS or police RE protag I can recall is my favorite girl Claire.

Don't tell me who Ethan is if it's later revealed unless you wanna spoiler tag it.

Im late to the topic, but Im surprised you never played 7 yet. Its a fantastic game and im glad to see you enjoying it so far.

I actually really like Ethan. Some people were angry about him because they really love the classic RE characters. Which isn't something I super get? They aren't particularly deep. I feel like Ethan is definitely the most developed of them.

Yeah 7 was the reason I started the series and I've been slowly working my way up to it. Real glad it's lived up (and exceeded) my expectations. I'm having a blast.

I like the classics as the action heroes they are. Not a lot of depth beyond Leon's one liners or Barry's...well Barry's just awesome, but I got some sort of nostalgia for Chris and poor Jill. Think Claire's a real good protag too.

That being said I'm not married to any of them or think any of them are great characters. I'm fine with introducing anyone new and so far Ethan's pretty cool. Definitely seems like an everyman and his reactions to the madness around him seem to be on point (granted he's doing incredibly well taking it all in stride).

Went back through the big house and got the key cards. Vintage RE.

So the mold didn't go into Lucas' room and Lucas was a little nerd too before losing his mind. Wonder why his room's untouched. Not sure who Eveline is yet. Is there another daughter or could she be the little girl? I'll figure it out.

Found another tape. Thought these would be more frequent. Only the second so far. Really hope I didn't miss any. Such a great idea. Psycho VR escape room. Very fun and gave a feel for what a bastard Lucas is. RIP camera guy.

Going back through the basement in pitch black was tense as fuck. Then at the end I got ambushed by a sludge monster. Figured fuck it, I probably never have to come back here. Turned around to run away and ran straight into another one which scared the god damn piss out of me. Then they had me cornered and I was just spraying my tiny flame thrower around. Pretty sure I was like ducking in my chair trying to avoid 'em. Made it out alive with a shotgun headshot to one of 'em. Oh also we have crawling ones that remind me of lickers.

Entered Lucas' party and this is a really fucking cool idea for this game. Neon lights and music. Lucas is a real showman. Pretty fresh for Resident Evil, but works so well with this set up. Slight Alfred Ashford vibes with the trap house. That level plays out very different in the Darkside Chronicles version.

Gotta say they've done a great job of making each of the Bakers like a mini boss for each area and making them distinct. They alllll suck and I want them dead. But boy do they have personality for days.

So Lucas likes being a Wolverine healing freak and doesn't want Zoe to create a cure. Valid enough. Gonna be satisfying to take him out.

Almost 3am here so might be done for the day, but damn. What a session. This game is aces.

Oh and grandma just fucking sitting there in her chair continues to freak me the fuck out man.

Made it through Lucas' games. Avoided getting a nail through the hand, a "LOSER" tattoo and burning to death cause I already saw the tape and remembered the codes. I guess it'd be trial and error otherwise.

Got to Zoe & Mia and then Jack came back. Thankfully he's covered in eyeballs to aim for. Not a bad fight. Think he's done for good this time.

Soooo decision time. Zoe or Mia. I don't really trussst either, buuut Ethan did go through all this for Mia so seems to fit that he'd save her first. Though she seems to be in on this somehow or something. Sorry Zoe. Wish we could have had a conversation first.

Wow was not expecting to just leave. I wonder if I'm going back. I never figured out one of the toy treasure maps with the toy gun or wooden axe. Also have coins I haven't spent on upgrades. Maybe I will go back, buuut every door was opened by the end so maybe that's all for the Baker residence.

Riiiight the ship. Way back at the start of the game I remember a note about them going to check out a ship that washed up on the bayou. Pretty big. So this is where the ghost girl came from I reckon. She had what looked like a drawing of a cracked ship too in her spooky ass room.

Mia time with flashbacks. Resident Evil once again on a boat for the 3rd time now. Spooky.

Played the flashback tape and yeah. Eveline is a bio-child experiment. Mia was "imprinted" on her and whatever evil organization was using her was trying to smuggle her to a different country to avoid another evil organization from taking her.

Eveline does seem pretty evil, but hard to blame her. Mia said she was vomiting up the black goop that created the monsters? So all this mold and stuff is coming from inside her? Gross.

And I guess Ethan's just some guy who married the wrong evil scientist chick I guess. Maybe Mia was secretly one of the good guys. I'm surprised I'm playing so long as her. Even this is classic Resident Evil. Playing as Ada, Sherry, Carlos. Actually wait is that in almost every game? Rebecca...Ashley...Steve? Hmm. Guess not in 5 or 6.

Anyway finished the tape and idk if it was smart of Mia to tell Evie to "piss off" when she asked if they could be a family. Mia told her no and called her a motherfucker. I might have just played along to try and rescue Ethan.

Taking a break for now. Wasn't expecting all this. Does feel like the endgame is in sight though. We shall see as I continue on tonight (hopefully).

Wouldn't mind finishing up before Mario Wonder comes out...

Though there is also the DLC. Need to look into what order those came out and how I should play 'em.

RE7 has A LOT of very short DLCs.

Not A Hero is set immediately after the Main Game.
End of Zoe is set just after Not A Hero.

They're both more girthy.

Daughters and Bredroom are set before the start of the game.

Every other DLC is basically a little amusement.

21 is just incredibly fucked up Blackjack (I love it TBH)
Nightmare, Ethan Must Die and Jack's 55th Birthday are just fun game modes.

Although technically Nightmare/21 are also set before the start of the game. Ethan Must Die and 55th are non canon game modes.

Sure, but they are mostly trained super cops in S.T.A.R.S. Chris is like a freakazoid. Billy was ex-military. Leon might have been a rookie cop, but he was at least trained somewhat.

Moira surprised me with how good she handled herself. Especially since in that game if you got scared enough you'd mutate into a monster. Guess being Barry's daughter is enough to make you tough as nails.

Ethan reminds me more of a Silent Hill protag. Who is this guy that came in, destroyed a cult, a drug ring and killed a god? He's just some writer who wants his damn daughter back.

Jack's 55th Birthday is pretty dumb, but 21 is amusing.

Ethan Must Die was frustrating as hell for a while but I ended up getting into it. Took 42 attempts to finish it for the first time >_>

Damn Mia's really packing some heavy firepower right now. These bombs kill the fat mold pretty easily. Might want to save them up for a boss though.

Yup got her full inventory. Now Ethan is armed like a true endgame RE hero. Just swimming in heavy ammo and heals.

Hallucination with chill Jack Baker trying to explain the plot. Odd. Really hope I get to go back and save Zoe or maybe killing Evie will end it all.

Down in the salt mines. This game really reminds me a lot of Outlast 2 only not shit. Love it. Also having enough shotgun and machine gun rounds to just blow these moldy fucks away feels great.

One note was from someone reporting back from inside the Baker's place it seemed? Zoe? Hmm. Not sure. They did mention Evie aging rapidly and getting gray hair. Shit is she just...the fucking grandma? All the young versions I'm seeing are just hallucinations? Confused if that'd mean Ethan and Mia are still infected though. We'll see.

Got the silver bullet to kill Evie and this sure feels like the last save room in the game. Bout to stock up and ready to kick some ass.

Ehhhh, sort of. They infected an embryo with the mold. So she's an infected little girl, but she's been that way her whole life.

Jesus that last gauntlet. I sprinted right through it shotgunning anything in my path. Made it right to the end without dying until I got stun locked by two fat molds.

I KNEW IT WAS THE OLD WOMAN! That's awesome.

Last boss was pretty nothing, but at the same time I was packing heavy firepower so made real short work of it. And then Chris came to save the day.

Eveline's dead. Ethan & Mia made it out alive. Chris is with...blue umbrella? Uhhh happy ending! Other than Zoe... Real curious to go back and finish the game from that point to see how the paths change.

A+ credits. This Go Tell Aunt Rhody song slaps.

And that's the game. What a phenomenal game. Top 3 Resident Evils. What a way to revitalize the franchise. Absolutely adored it.

We'll do the story based DLC tomorrow and see what other info we get from that. Pretty curious what's going on with Chris, the BSAA, Umbrella, etc. Same time I think it's great that this game felt so disconnected from the series after 6. Was better off doing its own thing. Only really picked up on one reference to the old characters right at the start. Wonder if I missed more.

The jump to Madmouse is quite steep.

RE doesn't pull punches with the hard difficulty

Madhouse is actually a pretty good hard mode. It does more than just amp up the damage.

There are cassette tapes which work like ink ribbons in the older games. There are a finite amount of them and no/few respawn points.
Items are moved around and changed.
Enemies aren't just stronger, they're a little faster.
Jack begins hunting you earlier.
There are more antique coins to collect and more cages to unlock. They put the Scorpion Key in one of the cages, a coin that you hold in your inventory to increase your attack, and another coin you hold to increase defense.

To add to this:

Enemies aren't just stronger and faster. They're also more aggressive and some of the placement has been changed so people on a 2nd playthrough are still taken off guard.
Jack also hunts you for longer and more aggressively.

It's more than the cliche shit game design "Hard mode just makes you do less damage the enemy do more damage" they actually put thought into it

I heard that Jack is a lot quicker as well so you can't just run away from him as easily. If he's on your tail and you're nowhere near a safe room you are fucked basically.

Going back to see what happens if I choose Zoe.

Damn soooo is Zoe just the straight up wrong choice? IIRC Zoe's fate is left open in the first ending. She says she's screwed, but we never see her turn to dust. Now both her and Mia are dead.

Well a quick run through the salt mines and back to the first house and we'll see this ending play out. Did want to see what would happen before starting the DLC.
