If LotR came out today Samwise Gamgee would be a half naked elf chick and there would be at least two furry characters

Not really sure what you are talking about, but you seem angry about it.

Also, historical non-fiction definitely has revisionist of a singular demographic over generations that has had some far reaching consequences.

Also if LotR came out today, Sam would be played by Timothy Chalomet and all of the fanart would be of him fucking Frodo over and over, again and again, on the bed, up the wall, on the couch, the kitchen, the coffee table, up the wall, on the driveway, in a dennys bathroom

I wouldn't say tarnished as much as hopelessly upstaged by some of the greatest literature ever written kicking off the genre.

Also, Magic card art is amazing and sometimes sexy. It's the only art where I will be legitimately happy just looking at pictures.

Anyways if you don't like fetish stuff don't read stories on the internet. Formal literature is still written and released by major publishers. Unless you have some reason to suspect Tolkien would become a fetish writer?

If you replaced all the poems with futa elves it wouldn't diminish the quality of LotR because nobody reads the poems anyway.

What if there was a "hard" high fantasy. Kinda like what The Witcher is trying to do, but even harder with the realism

It's called a hard magic system where magic works more like a science instead of actual magic. Personally I like soft magic systems better because of that. I want magic to be magic, not otherworldly science.

I can accept soft magic if they would explain HOW they do anything. I mean, in old DnD books the descriptions for many priest/cleric spells were ok, you're beseeching a god to do something

But wizards? What... do you just, like, THINK hard and it works?

To put it another way: If you were on the Holodeck playing as a wizard, how would the HOLODECK know what do to?

It doesn't matter, it's magic. As long as you don't take people out of the story with the characters using magic to solve all their problems or have a ridiculous deus ex machina they will still suspend their disbelief.

Martin Banks is just a normal guy who has made an abnormal discovery: he can manipulate reality, thanks to reality being nothing more than a computer program. With every use of this ability, though, Martin finds his little tweaks have not escaped notice. Rather than face prosecution, he decides instead to travel back in time to the Middle Ages and pose as a wizard.

What could possibly go wrong?

An American hacker in King Arthurs court, Martin must now train to become a full-fledged master of his powers, discover the truth behind the ancient wizard Merlinand not, yknow, die or anything.

I'd say dark fantasy has become worse. Though the absolute worst may be modern urban fantasy.

Arcane magic in D&D is basically this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thaumaturgy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermetic_Order_of_the_Golden_Dawn

Also, there are more mechanistic explanations for how it works (depending on the setting) if you actually read the books, but that would require you to actually read the things you're complaining about, and no one does that anymore.

I can accept liquid-soft explanations for magic as long as it's non-zero...

For DnD, I kinda reverse engineered a thought based on how magic scrolls work. You don't need to know magic to invoke a scroll, only need the magical literacy to do so (Thief, for example); and since magic there is based on memorization and a spell gets forgotten after casting... I figured it's some sort of forming a perfect image of the same contents as a scroll, which when done so, can be invoked the same way AS a scroll.... basically, your brain is a scroll and once invoked bursts into flames... errrr, well, micro brain flames. ... the paper of Scrolls themselves don't typically hold any power, it's all about the invokation; ... which comes from, somewhere I guess,

At least that's how it used to be when scrolls were magical tools and could be used by ANY magical tool user even if they didn't know magic

I just randomly stumbled upon a video on 12th level magic in DnD and the lore of Mystra... DnD magic now makes sense to me, since it's basically the same as Cleric spells, only with Mystra doing all the work.
